Lopez says Somerton’s housing market is stable, with only a few homes for sale at once. The median sale price for single-family homes here is $274,000, lower than the state and national median. Ranch- and Pueblo-Revival homes built between the 1930s and ‘50s have typically been renovated and range from $120,000 to $220,000. Three-bedroom Craftsman-style and minimal traditional homes from the 1960s through the ‘90s can sell between $165,000 and $270,000. New traditional homes with Mediterranean and Spanish-style elements toward the south range from $295,000 to $424,000.

A variety of festivities
The annual Tamale Festival draws tens of thousands to the city to celebrate the cherished the dish and the culture around it. It also raises scholarship money for local kids attending Arizona State University. Children’s Day, or Dia Del Nino, promotes literacy and shares cultural traditions, while holiday parades feature light displays and fireworks.
Parks for exercise and events
Area pocket parks are within walking distance of residential streets and feature walking paths, play equipment and picnic areas. Council Avenue Park hosts community events and is the place to fish and play soccer. Ball fields and splash pads accompany Joe Munoz Park. Somerton also offers community, senior and cultural centers for residents of all ages, plus a public pool.

City restaurants sit along U.S. Route 95 and south along Somerton Avenue. Menus include authentic Mexican and Tex-Mex fare, plus Chinese and breakfast dishes. A few fast-food joints are scattered around, and locally owned businesses, cafes and an ice cream shop sit centrally and to the east. Residents can pick up essentials at area grocers and bargain retailers. Department stores and malls are found northeast in Yuma.

Nearby state route and bus services
U.S. State Route 95 (Main Street) runs through the city center, leading 11 miles northeast to Yuma and 12 miles southwest to San Luis. Yuma County Area Transportation provides fixed and flex routes throughout the city and surrounding areas, and city parks are the only bicycle-friendly areas in Somerton. Yuma Regional Medical Center is about 10 miles northeast, and the city’s family-owned airport is just east. The closest international airport is in Yuma.

Students in kindergarten through Grade 8 can attend Somerton Elementary School District, which earns a C-plus from Niche, while high schoolers can transition to Yuma Union High School District, which also earns a C-plus from Niche. According to Arizona Crime Statistics, Somerton’s violent crime rates have increased year over year, while property crime rates have dropped. Somerton, like most of Arizona, is in the desert and experiences hot summers and mild winters. Lopez says droughts haven’t historically been a problem here and that residents get used to the dry environment.
