West of Owensboro sits Sorgho, a rural neighborhood with a primary avenue into the city. When asked why homebuyers choose Sorgho over other communities, real estate agent Brian Luttrell of RE/Max Professional Realty Group says, "Most people choose to live over there because they work on that side of town." Sorgho's landscape gives residents the spaciousness and natural views of a rural agricultural area without disconnecting them from city employers and everyday conveniences. In fact, the neighborhood is only 1 mile from the city's edge and 4 miles from downtown. However, as an agriculturally focused community, many residents can find much of what they need near home, from groceries to outdoor recreation.

Sorgho is located in a Rural Service Area, or an A-R Rural Agriculture Zone. Apart from rural residences, this zoning protects agricultural land by discouraging urban development. As a lifelong Owensboro resident, Luttrell says this means many people living in Sorgho have farmland behind their homes. Home styles include ranch-styles, bungalows and the occasional Colonial-style two-story home. The neighborhood also has two subdivisions with New Traditional brick homes built in the last 20 years. Subdivision homes sit close together along sidewalked streets, featuring pristinely kept grass lawns with ornamental shrubbery. Most single-family homes outside the subdivisions line Highway 56 instead of being clustered along solely residential streets. Across the board, home prices range between $175,000 and $500,000.

Sorgho Elementary School within the neighborhood
Students attend Sorgho Elementary School, which is within the neighborhood's boundaries. The school is a Leader In Me Lighthouse School with a B rating on Niche. Next, students attend Burns Middle School, followed by Apollo High School. Both schools have a B-minus rating, but Apollo High offers Empower U, one of Kentucky's largest dual credit programs. Students can take courses in agriculture, coding, engineering and more through the Kentucky Community and Technical College system.

Soap box derbies and Little League at nearby parks
Locals have a few options when it comes to outdoor recreation. Kids can play on the Sorgho Elementary School playground and ball fields when school isn't in session, and The Daviess County Playground Association offers summer sports programs there. Youth leagues of tee ball, baseball and softball meet weekly from April to June. Many natural parks are within a few miles of the neighborhood, including Ben Hawes Park less than 4 miles north. The 298-acre park has almost 8 miles of easy-to-intermediate mountain bike trails, an archery range, a public golf course and various sports facilities. It also features a gravity racing track for the Owensboro Lions Club Soap Box Derby. Three rally races are run each year in April, August and September. Five miles south, Panther Creek Park has a stocked fishing lake, an 18-hole disc golf course and ball diamonds for adult league tournaments. It's also the site of the city's annual Labor Day celebration, the Independence Bank Fireworks Festival.

Locally sourced goods at The Cottage and Burley's
The neighborhood has limited retail stores and restaurants. However, there is a Dollar General along Highway 56, and The Cottage Farm Stand is a tucked-away spot for locally sourced coffee and made-from-scratch pastries. The store also hosts annual events, like The Pumpkin and Pickle Fest in October. Local farmers sell fresh produce and preserved goods at Burley's Harvest Market or from individual farm stands. Plus, since many homes have farmland, some residents grow their own groceries. For commercial grocery stores and sit-down restaurants, people head 2 miles west in Owensboro. The closest options include Kroger, Ollie's Bargain Outlet and Moonlite Bar-b-q Inn, a city mainstay for barbeque buffets.

The city's regional airport is just east
The eastern side of Sorgho is directly next to the Owensboro-Daviess County Regional Airport. The airport offers several direct flights but is small enough that it doesn't contribute excess noise to the neighborhood. Highway 56, which connects to Highway 81, is the primary route to Highway 60 and Owensboro. Drivers are also 3 miles from Audubon Parkway, which also leads to Owensboro and Highway 60 but also stretches far west. "It leads straight to the new I-69 that's going to connect Henderson and Evansville," Luttrell says.
