Small-town feel just outside of Barre City
South Barre is a neighborhood in Barre Town, which encapsulates Barre City in Central Vermont. “People who aren’t from here don’t really recognize that Barre is Barre,” says local Realtor and Barre native Brandon Fowler, explaining that apart from the city proper, the boundaries of the neighborhoods in Barre Town blend together. “There are these villages, but it’s all the same. It’s one big community.” South Barre offers a bucolic feel with its lush setting, larger residential lots and spaced-out properties – though it’s only minutes from Downtown Barre. “South Barre is more towards the rural side of things,” he says. “Houses are more spread out and lots are bigger, but you still have great access to the highway.” However, Fowler, who has been selling homes in the area for 7 years, says South Barre’s main appeal is its small-town, community feel. “You know everybody, and you can rely on your community to lend a hand when you need it,” he says. “I can literally send a text to the Nelson’s Hardware store down the road and stop in half an hour later, and everything is ready at the register for me. You don’t get that anywhere else.”
Vermont’s diverse housing stock
The winding roads that branch off South Barre Road snake through the neighborhood’s scenic landscape, revealing a mix of single-family architectural styles. Fowler says that Vermont’s housing, in general, is very diverse, and South Barre is no exception. “It makes real estate interesting out here,” he says. “South Barre is not the oldest wing of Barre, so houses are a little more modern, but you still have everything from raised ranches to big custom homes – it’s the full spectrum.” Ranch-style homes are common, though they range considerably in size. Bi-level and raised ranch styles are also typical, blended among larger colonial-inspired and Cape-style homes. Prices for real estate can range from the mid $200,000s to the mid $500,000s. Properties tend to be larger in South Barre, with most homes situated on about 2 acres of land. This not only offers more space between homes but also provides a sense of security—the neighborhood scores a 2 out of 10 for its CAP Index Crime Score, lower than the national average of 4.

Staying active at nearby Barre Recreational Area and South Barre Park
South Barre has a plethora of recreational facilities and outdoor natural spaces. South Barre Park has a playground and fields, as well as a pavilion for picnics. The Barre Town Recreational Area is just east of the neighborhood, with athletic facilities like basketball and tennis courts. The recreational area is also home to the Town of Barre Community Dog Park and Barre Recreational Skate Park. To the north of South Barre sits the Barre Municipal Swimming Pool, Barre Skate Park and additional sports courts. Residents may also take advantage of the great outdoors. “There are all kinds of hunting and fishing opportunities,” Fowler says, emphasizing that the Millstone Hill trails are also popular among recreationists for hiking and nature walks.
Local events and attractions in Barre
Barre Partnership is a Downtown Barre organization that spearheads community events in the area, including Barre’s biggest: The Heritage Festival. Every July, the city and town erupt as residents flock Downtown for dozens of local food and craft vendors, family-friendly activities and live music entertainment. The weekend celebration kicks off with a mile-long parade and caps with a firework display. Thunder Road is a quarter-mile speedway and car racing track that hosts the annual Vermont Milk Bowl. The late model race takes place every October for a full weekend, complete with an opening ceremony and three 50-lap segments. The Barre City Auditorium and B.O.R. Ice and Turf Arena host a variety of sporting events and concerts, and the arena also offers seasonal public skating and figure skating hours. One of the area’s biggest attractions is the Barre Gray Quarry and Rock of Ages Visitors Center. The quarry, which has been in operation since 1885, delves 600 feet in depth and is the world’s largest operating deep-hole granite quarry. Guided tours run daily; visitors start at the Visitors Center and return to their cars for a “caravan-style” tour that leads to observation sites around the impressive quarry.
Small-town eateries on Main Street in Downtown Barre
A slew of shops and eateries line North Main Street in Downtown Barre, just north of the neighborhood. Favorites like The Quarry Kitchen and Spirits serve contemporary American dishes, while Cornerstone Pub and Kitchen offers an extensive list of craft brews in a gastropub setting. Down the street, a colorfully bedazzled and painted cat statue beckons visitors to Kitty Korner, a cat-themed café that allows customers to sip on specialty coffee drinks while petting kittens up for adoption. South Barre Road, which is the neighborhood’s main thoroughfare, is lined with auto shops and local businesses and service providers. Hannaford is the closest grocery store, though options in Barre City include AR Market and Quality Market.
Barre Unified Union schools offer farm-to-table education
South Barre students are part of the Barre Unified Union School District. Kids may start their education at the Barre Town Middle and Elementary School, which serves prekindergarten through eighth grades and receives a C-plus from Niche. The school’s community garden flourishes year-round through the Crops by Kids program, which teaches students about growing vegetables and fruits and promotes natural, healthy food options. From there, students can continue their agricultural education at Spaulding Educational Alternatives, a division of the B-minus-graded Spaulding High School that offers project-based learning opportunities. The alternative school is part of Vermont’s Farm-to-School program, which promotes sustainable farming.
Connecting to Barre City, Montpelier and Burlington
South Barre Road runs north-south along the length of the neighborhood’s western side, connecting through Barre City to Route 302. Interstate 89 is about 4 miles west of South Barre. Downtown Montpelier is about 11 miles away from the neighborhood, while Burlington and the Burlington International Airport are approximately 47 miles away.
