Situated squarely on the Illinois side of the Illinois-Wisconsin state border, South Beloit is the smaller, quieter sister city to Beloit. Home to about 8,000 people, South Beloit is primarily residential, with some significant parks serving the community, as well as the Rock River. Residents here can put distance between themselves and work, with most major employers located across the border in Beloit, like the ABC Supply Co. national headquarters. Still, the city isn’t expected to stay too quiet for long. “We are looking at more development,” says Realtor Teresa Skridla with Century 21 Affiliated. “Right across the border on I-90, there is a casino being built, which means there is going to be more commercial development right in that Beloit-South Beloit area. We are really excited about it — it’s going to bring a lot of people to the area.” The Beloit Casino broke ground in October 2024 and expects to open in the summer of 2026.

Riverfront and lakeside activities in South Beloit
The Rock River flows through both Beloit and South Beloit, where people can kayak along the Rock River Trail. The water trail goes down to Rockford and has launching points at various stops along the riverfront. South Beloit Municipal Park surrounds Lake Victoria, where people can launch non-motorized watercraft. It used to be an old quarry, and the minerals cause the water to stay a vibrant blue. On land, people can walk around the lake, play disc golf or head to the playground. Swimming is not permitted at Lake Victoria, but people can head next door to Pearl Lake instead. “A lot of people scuba dive,” Skridla says. “They’ve got some submerged boats and plane parts that scuba divers really like to explore.”
