A mixed-use community near the airport

Lincoln Way is an established South Bend neighborhood with an urban vibe. Just 3 miles from downtown, the community has easy access to shopping, dining and parks. It is also within walking distance of many schools. In addition to single-family homes, the community comprises apartments, retail and light industrial areas. A drive through the residential sections reveals midcentury and vintage homes, many in need of updating, and overgrown vacant lots. Mature maple trees line the wide streets, offering shade to sections of the sidewalks. The neighborhood is less than 2 miles from South Bend International Airport, which may cause noise issues in some areas.

Helping those in need

Unity Gardens is a non-profit organization that provides freshly grown produce to those in need. The organization's mission is to improve community health by increasing the accessibility of fruits and vegetables and providing education on nutrition and food preparation. Volunteers and staff plant and care for the gardens, and folks from the community are invited to come out to harvest. "The garden is open to everyone, and we don't require proof of economic status," Steward says. "This is a uniquely dignified way to provide for the disadvantaged," says Sara Stewart, founder and CEO of Unity Gardens. The organization holds events and classes, has a store and recruits volunteers. Nearby Imani Unidad offers counseling, education and advocacy to enhance the social and mental well-being of marginalized individuals in the South Bend community.
