"The neighborhood’s food is wonderful," says Realtor Carmen Ramirez Montenegro, who sells houses in the area with Collins & Company Realtors. "It's authentic Mexican – a combination of southern, northern and Tex-Mex." Jenny’s Bakery Panaderia on Walnut Street is a family-owned business specializing in Mexican pastries. The business, which has a parking lot, also serves handmade carnitas and homestyle favorites like quesadillas and tortas. Just off Ford Street, Bootleg’ers is a small, cash-only bar with neon beer signs illuminating black-and-white mugshots of infamous gangsters and outlaws. About a half-mile west, Juan Camaney serves authentic Salvadoran cuisine. About 1-½ miles to the neighborhood’s east, the Michoacán Supermarket specializes in Latin cooking ingredients. There are multiple Latin restaurants about six blocks north along Western Avenue, including an ice cream shop called Los Tres Mangos De Michoacan. The University of Notre Dame's football team has established its iconic status in American sports with 11 national championship titles. The team's stadium has a capacity of 80,000. AMC South Bend 16 is about 3 miles to the neighborhood’s south. The Studebaker National Museum is 1 mile northeast and showcases roughly 120 vehicles. Locals can try out open mics at The Drop Comedy Club, about 2 miles northeast of Oliver Gateway. South Bend builds community spirit with a variety of festivals. Within walking distance for many residents, Pulaski Park is immediately north of the neighborhood. In 2020, the city finished a $1 million makeover on the public greenspace. The park has a splash pad, a shelter, irrigated soccer fields, a playground and basketball courts. Half a mile south of Oliver Gateway, the Ice Box Skating Rink holds figure skating competitions and youth hockey matches. Phillip St. Clair Park, 3 miles west. is home to Mathys Little League Park and Byers Softball Complex. It also has tennis courts and a playground.The Salvation Army Kroc Center
The Salvation Army Kroc Center is less than a mile to the neighborhood's northeast. Members have access to aquatic and fitness centers, arts and education classes and a summer camp. The center offers scholarships for lower-income families.
