Swanson Park children can romp in a splash pad, feed a giraffe and walk through a tropical rainforest all in one day, all in one place. Potawatomi Park, Potawatomi Zoo and Potawatomi Conservatory are about a mile away, to the southwest of the neighborhood. The tree-shaded park offers water recreation, an exercise track, a Kids’ Kingdom Playground and a Performance Arts Pavillion. The zoo is Indiana’s oldest and is home to over 400 animals, including African lions, snow leopards, red pandas and the Southern White rhino. The season runs from early April through the end of October, with occasional events occurring during the winter. The Potawatomi Conservatories (also called the South Bend Conservatories) comprise three indoor conservatories and botanical gardens. Each conservatory offers a unique experience, showcasing a variety of plant species. The University of Notre Dame Stadium, home of the Fighting Irish team, is considered one of the most iconic venues for college football, and it’s just a 3-mile drive from the neighborhood.

The Skillet Restaurant and Catering has been a community staple since 1955, known for its Polish buffet and homestyle American cooking. “This is a very tight-knit community,” says Dave Vite, restaurant co-owner. “And we see all generations, from longtime residents to new families.” The restaurant is closed Mondays and Tuesdays. For shopping and dining, most residents go to Grape and Gumwood roads. “You’ve got your fast food; you’ve got local restaurants. It’s a popular area.” University Park Mall, also on Grape Road, has JCPenney, Macy’s and Barnes & Noble as anchor stores. Trader Joe’s and Martin’s Grocery Store are less than 2 miles away.

It is the fifth biggest intersection in South Bend, according to Vite. “But once you’re inside the neighborhood, it’s peaceful and quiet.” Commuters have access to major thoroughfares like Interstate 90, making the 3-mile drive downtown simple. In case of medical emergencies, South Bend Medical Foundation is 3 miles away. Transpo, the public transportation system, has a bus stop at Main and 3rd streets, and South Bend International Airport is a 6-mile drive. “Not many use the bus, relying on their cars to get around. Pendl says. “Most people use their cars.”
