Speedway races and fairs bring energy to South Boston

Attractions and community events help foster a dynamic, small-town feel to South Boston. The South Boston Speedway, located just south of the community, hosts a range of racing events on its .4-mile short track. The Halifax County Fair takes place at the Halifax County Fairgrounds every October. The five-day festival features carnival rides, food vendors, music performances and more. Regular events include the Downtown South Boston Farmers Market, held off Broad Street. Local vendors sell seasonal veggies, fruits, meats and handmade goods on Saturdays from March through December and Wednesdays from May through September.

South Boston is car-dependent but has a walkable downtown

Though the downtown area is walkable, residents rely on cars for transportation in South Boston. Highway 501 is one of the main routes that bisects South Boston, connecting to Highway 58. Highway 360 also runs through South Boston and connects locals to Richmond, Virginia, about 113 miles northeast. The town is about 53 miles from Durham, North Carolina, and about 78 miles from Raleigh, North Carolina. The closest airport is Raleigh-Durham International Airport, 78 miles south.
