Rich in history and modern amenities

Situated at the confluence of the James and Appomattox Rivers, 16 miles south of downtown Richmond, Bermuda Hundred was the site of historic battles and bustling ports. Today, this largely residential area in the city of Chester offers natural beauty and suburban privacy, all with the convenience of living close to a big city.

“This part of Chester is seeing a lot of growth right now,” says Jessica Hall, a realtor with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate and a local Chester resident. “There is a variety of dining and entertainment choices, and you’ve got shopping centers with large retailers. There are also plenty of job opportunities, with the Amazon warehouse and the upcoming Lego factory.”

Highly desirable area with low inventory

There are a variety of architectural styles in Bermuda Hundred, with colonial revivals and Cape Cods predominating the market. “Bermuda Hundred is a highly desirable area with low inventory and high demand,” says Hall. One particularly desirable neighborhood is Rivers Bend. Bordered by the James River, this neighborhood is home to large transitional houses that sit on half-acre lots with tidy, sprawling lawns. This residential community offers shared amenities such as a 25-meter pool, clubhouse and tennis courts. Homes in Rivers Bend have four to five bedrooms and a median price of $515,000.

In the southernmost region of Bermuda Hundred, ranch homes with brick and vinyl siding sit on lots with simple landscaping beneath tall pine trees. This area does not share community amenities but offers comparatively affordable home prices instead, with homes ranging in price from $350,000 to $450,000. On average, homes in this neighborhood sell after 31 days on the market, compared to the national average of 42 days. With a limited inventory, desirable houses in Bermuda Hundred move quickly off the market.

Surrounded by natural beauty

Chester has a bounty of public green spaces, and Bermuda Hundred is no exception, with multiple parks in the area and state parks close by. Mountain bikes and dogs are welcome on the trails of the 800-plus-acre Dutch Gap Conservation Park, including a lagoon, complete with a public boat ramp, which is a quiet spot to spend an afternoon on the water. Adjacent to Dutch Gap is Henricus Historical Park, a living history museum depicting an English settlement with colonial buildings and actors in costume. The 176-acre Dodd Park at Point of Rocks features playgrounds, athletic fields, walking trails and picnic shelters.
