Small town located 10 miles from state capital
South Congaree has a rural vibe, but offers easy access to the greater Columbia metro region. Interstates 26 and 77 are close by, and the Columbia Metropolitan Airport is practically in South Congaree’s backyard. Yet homes here are still surrounded by nature. They are also some of the most affordable in the area, according to Leah Anderson, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty who has sold several homes in the town. “South Congaree has a small-town feel to it. You’ve got pretty much working class people and a lot of local family restaurants,” Anderson says. On typical days here, teens can be seen playing pickup basketball at the park near the town hall while mothers lay out picnics. There are also many churches, a United Neighbors Club and equestrian area, among other things.
Find a home and maybe a pond
Like much of this part of South Carolina, older brick ranch style homes placed in carved out pockets of wooded lands populated by towering pines are not uncommon in South Congaree. Established ranch-style homes sit on heavily wooded lots, a common sight in the rural suburbs of Columbia. But many homes here come with a rather interesting feature: ponds. Anderson says she shares a pond with about 10 other houses, and that probably every third house in South Congaree has access to one. “Some houses even have their own private pond,” she says, adding that residents can often be found fishing in these natural waters. Price points here go from about $180,000 to no higher than $300,000.
South Congaree is the place to be.

Local eats along Edmund Highway
A popular, family-owned eatery is Steve’s Deli on Edmund Highway, also humorously known as the “#1 SUB Contractor.” Regulars can pick from a myriad of half or whole subs, or get something off the grill like a chili-cheese burger with fries. Just up the road is another locally-owned joint, the South Congaree House of Pizza, which serves Italian and Greek specialties, as well as American-diner fare. For grocery shopping, residents can access a small shopping center anchored by a Food Lion.
Close to Lake Murray and the Peachtree Rock Heritage Preserve
Lake Murray, also called the Jewel of South Carolina, is located north of South Congaree. Whether they’re just making a short weekend stop or staying for a longer vacation, visitors to this recreational haven can take part in some world class fishing, go boating or simply take in the expansive and scenic waterfront views. For another natural scenic getaway, the Peachtree Rock Heritage Preserve sits less than 8 miles south of South Congaree. Visitors there can explore the woodlands, where they’ll find layered sandstone formations containing fossils of ancient marine creatures.
Peachtree Rock Heritage Preserve is 460 acres of protected habitat just 10 mins south of town.
Strong JROTC at Airport High

Congaree Elementary School is home to over 400 students in the West Columbia area.
Columbia Metropolitan Airport close to town
Town residents have direct highway connections to major metros like the Charlotte and Charleston areas due to the close proximity to interstates 26 and 77. They can also quickly catch a flight to other parts of the country at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport, which is practically in South Congaree’s backyard.
Interstates 77 and 26 open South Congaree up to the rest of the state.
