Suburban atmosphere and charm, urban access and excitement
Tucked away just under Hackensack sits South Hackensack – a distinct entity of its own, separate from its larger neighbor, but full of a similar kind of charm. “South Hackensack is very small, and very suburban in character,” says Robert Dombrowsky, real estate agent with RE/MAX Select and longtime resident of the area. “Proximity to New York City is still a huge deal, but it’s a bit quieter and less busy than Hackensack.” With the Big Apple still just over 20 miles away, South Hackensack makes it easy for those looking to get into the city daily – before returning home to a quieter slice of life.

Cape Cods and ranch styles throughout South Hackensack
South Hackensack’s housing stock is mostly newer, at least in comparison to many of its neighbors. “It’s a little bit of a younger area,” says Dombrowski. “You won’t find as many traditional styles here, at least not as many colonial revivals and things of that nature.” Homes in the area are mostly made up of Cape Cods, ranch styles, raised ranches, and the occasional split-level. Prices typically range from $380,000 to $750,000. Condominiums and townhouses are also available, with a chunk of the new construction in the area taken up by these options. And while the area is relatively newer, in comparison to some of its neighbors, South Hackensack still features a competitive market. “It’s a true bedroom community,” says Dombrowski. “And the taxes are low, as well – so it’s really attractive to homebuyers.”

Meet up with friends at Foodies Diner
Though South Hackensack is smaller and has less of a commercial presence than Hackensack to the north, there are still plenty of charming options for residents to choose from. Locals can get authentic Colombian cuisine at Noches De Colombia or get their fill of barbecue at Cubby's BBQ. Clemente Bakery is renowned for its in-house focaccia paninis and espresso. Foodies Diner is a popular spot for meeting up with friends, and residents looking to restock the fridge can do so at ShopRite or Stop & Shop. Retail options aren’t as plentiful in South Hackensack, though nearby towns make it easy to scratch that itch. “Paramus is right next door, and is great for retail shopping,” says Dombrowsky. “Residents of South Hackensack don’t have to go far at all, no matter what it is they need.”

Get to NYC easily
With Interstate 80 and Route 46 access, residents can look forward to a straightforward commute to the city. Though traffic still largely depends on the time of day (among other factors), South Hackensack is less congested than its neighbors. Teterboro Airport is right next door, allowing for another form of travel – though at times, this proximity can lead to unwanted noise. Residents also have access to the train and the bus, with Hackensack featuring a train station and bus stops running throughout the area.
