Located 14 miles from downtown Springfield, the suburb of South Hadley is crisscrossed with streams and sits on the Connecticut River. Nature is a big draw for South Hadley residents, and it's access to parks full of forested areas is one of the town's unique aspects.

Homes in the middle and south of town were generally developed in a grid pattern, and homes in the north tend to be farther apart. Prices generally start at around $300,000 and top out at around $700,000. Cape Cod, Ranch, and Colonial homes are popular all over town. Vinyl siding and shingled rooves are commonly part of the picture, and many homes have two-car garages and small front porches.

The area is served by South Hadley Public Schools, which has a B rating on Niche and excellent ratings for its academics, teachers, clubs, activities and college prep, along with a student-teacher ratio of 12 to 1. Students in the area start their academic journeys at Plains Elementary School, which has a B rating on Niche and continue on to Michael E. Smith Middle School, which has a B- rating on Niche and positive ratings for its academics and teachers. Learners wrap up their secondary academic journey at South Hadley High School, which has a B rating on Niche and is ranked in the top 10 public high schools in Hampshire Country by Niche. Mount Holyoke, a women's college in the center of town, is a major employer in South Hadley.

The northern tip of town is part of the hundreds of acres of forest that comprise Mount Holyoke Range and Skinner State Parks. Nature lovers can visit several parks in town, along with two conservation areas. It's no wonder there is so much green space around the area -- some impactful creatures used to roam the forests and fields. The first dinosaur footprints discovered in North America were spotted by the son of a South Hadley farmer in 1802. You can also visit the remains of America's first navigable canal at Canal Park. South Hadley is a hub of history, both ancient and modern.

The Village Commons Shopping Mall, just off Mount Holyoke's campus, has several restaurants and South Hadley's Tower Theatres. Try Johnny's Bar & Grille, a local staple that offers classic pub food in a relaxing atmosphere. The restaurant's colorful exterior welcomes residents in, and the burgers, fries and salads help them stick around. You can also head to Food 101 for a lesson in fine dining; sample Pommes Frites, wild mushroom ravioli, or spaghetti carbonara.

For homebuyers looking to make their own footprints in Massachusetts, South Hadley has a lot to offer, including easy access to major roadways. The town of Holyoke is just across the Connecticut River via Routes 202 or 116. You can follow those roads to hop on I-91 and make your way to downtown Springfield. With its convenient location and, plenty of access to nature, and a quiet atmosphere, this Massachusetts town is an option worth considering.
