Outdoor escapes for nature lovers in South Hampton
South Hampton offers many beautiful natural areas. The Powwow River Woodlands is small compared to other preservation areas, but it is ecologically rich. Spanning just over 7 acres, the forest sits along the Powwow River and features a short, easy trail loop of under 1 mile. The woodlands offer hiking, biking, fishing and kayaking opportunities. Managed by the Southeast Land Trust of New Hampshire, the land was donated in memory of the Coffin family and is permanently protected under a conservation easement held by the town. The forest provides public recreation and a valuable wildlife corridor that connects to larger natural areas. One such area is the Cowden State Forest, which offers more hiking opportunities to visitors. The Powwow River itself offers recreational experiences, flowing 23 miles through New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Anglers can cast their lines into the water, and paddlers can launch their kayaks or canoes. Straddling South Hampton and Amesbury, Tuxbury Pond has a popular campground along its shores. The Tuxbury Pond RV Resort offers a swimming pool, sports facilities, a game room, a playground and more. Visitors can rent RVs and enjoy a relaxing stay by the water. Additionally, South Hampton is a short drive from the Seacoast region, with Salisbury Beach located about 9 miles from the community’s center.
