South Harrison Township is a sprawling rural community in New Jersey’s Gloucester County. The New Jersey Legislature formed the township in the 1880s and became another facet of Gloucester County’s massively successful agricultural and industrial ventures. To this day, the county is one of the chief food producers not only for New Jersey but also for the continental United States. Quiet residential streets lead to excellent schools, serene memorial parks and lively local businesses.

Tall homes sit along long country roads, with blocks of homes broken up by dense forests and vast fields and farmland. Route 45, Monroeville and Harrisonville Roads are among the main thoroughfares running through the community, providing straightforward routes to I-295 leading either 26 miles west to Wilmington or 28 miles northeast to Philadelphia. The township’s residential landscape is comprised mainly of single-family houses on large home lots, with sweeping views of the surrounding countryside and a small collection of condominiums and townhouses. Tall but simple Colonial-revival houses line Harrisonville Road, the township’s main thoroughfare, featuring covered front porches and plenty of yard space for cultivating a garden or playing lawn games. Elsewhere in the township, there are also single-story bungalows and ranch-style houses that offer similar amenities and spacious interiors, allowing homeowners to take advantage of every inch of living space. Most homes also feature paved driveways, garages and ample street parking, with home prices ranging from $225,000 for smaller bungalows to $905,000 or more for larger colonial houses and country estates.

Public school students are served by South Harrison Township and Kingsway Regional School District, beginning their academic careers at primary schools like South Harrison Township Elementary School. The school has a B-minus Niche rating and teaches from kindergarten through sixth grade. Students move on to intermediate and secondary institutions such as Kingsway Regional Middle and High School. Both schools have at least an overall B-rating on Niche and the latter high school has athletic programs that have graduated professional athletes for NFL teams such as the Denver Broncos and the New York Jets.

Local green spaces allow locals to get out and get active. Stewart Memorial Park is located just outside town, with sprawling fields and walking trails leading by a covered picnic shelter, ball fields and playgrounds for the kids to enjoy. Ella Harris Recreation Park is another vast recreational space, with indoor facilities as well as outdoor athletic fields, chess tables and walking trails leading to gazebos perfect for relaxing in serene natural surroundings. There are plenty of seasonal parks located around the township, such as Night of Terror, a haunted house and scare park perfect for getting the blood flowing and the screams screaming around Halloween.

Many local retailers and restaurants are just a short drive away from home. Northeastern retailers like ShopRite keep local kitchens stocked with fresh produce, bulk foodstuffs, toiletries and other household essentials. Grab a coffee and browse through bestsellers at Brainstorm Books & More, an independent bookstore with a range of children’s and adult fiction and nonfiction titles, with a lovely novelty, gift and coffee shop. Grab a table at David & Sons BBQ, a regional franchise offering delicious plates of tender brisket, BBQ and other American fare.

Enjoy the best in serene countryside living in South Harrison Township.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
