Fields and forests of emerald green for as far as the eye can see are an everyday experience in South Huntingdon Township. This slice of Westmoreland County is known for its rural character and is the place to go for those seeking a sizable plot of land while maintaining connectivity to the wider Pittsburgh metro area. Homes South Huntingdon Township is still largely undeveloped in terms of residential construction. Homes here are spread out along serpentine country roads that cut through a landscape that’s hilly in spots. “When you buy homes in that area you’re going to get an acre or 2,” says local Realtor Jeff Dawson of Century 21 Frontier Realty, who has about four decades of experience in the area. There are houses here that date back to the 19th century, and others built across a timeline that spans to recent years. Ramblers and colonials are some of the common styles seen in the area, with square footages of about 1,500 on average. Houses in South Huntingdon usually sell for prices in the $100,000s and $200,000s. Schools The Yough School District serves students in South Huntingdon Township. Kids here may start at Mendon Elementary for kindergarten through fourth grade, which has a C-plus rating on Niche and features its own Maker Space where students can learn about science, technology, engineering, arts and math in hands-on ways. Students then move on to the C-plus-rated Yough Intermediate Middle School for grades 5 to 8, which offers multiple interscholastic sports teams, including boys and girls soccer and girls basketball. The course offerings at Yough Senior High, which carries a B grade, include an engineering class. One of Yough Senior High’s traditions is “Tractor Day,” when students can drive farm tractors to school to celebrate the end of the academic year. Parks Hunting is a major recreational activity in South Huntingdon Township. Residents have the 2,600-acre State Game Lands Number 296 in their backyard, where they can find black bears, eastern cottontail rabbits, ruffed grouse, turkeys and white-tailed deer. This area offers great views of the hills, too. The Youghiogheny River is another draw, for boating and fishing. Anglers can catch smallmouth bass, muskie, trout and walleye here. Locals can take their kids to enjoy the playground at Goehring Park. There’s a fishing pond here as well. Shopping and Dining Locals can pick up groceries at the Giant Eagle Supermarket near Goehring Park. Residents here tend to migrate to nearby Rostraver Township and the borough of West Newton for dining. Gary’s Chuckwagon is a well-liked spot in West Newton, popular in part for its breakfast. Gary's Chuckwagon has an on-site bakery, too, pumping out cakes, donuts and more. Sonny’s Prime and sister restaurant Sonny’s Grille are hotspots in Rostraver Township, known for their crabcakes. Events South Huntingdon Township is home to the Pittsburgh Renaissance Festival, a 16th-century medieval-themed amusement park that’s open on weekends from late August to early October. The festival features all sorts of live music, comedy and stunt shows. Visitors can enjoy a range of food here, too, from turkey legs to smoked bratwursts, and shop for art, toys, leather goods and more. Transportation Interstate 70 runs through South Huntingdon Township, which residents can hop on to reach the Pennsylvania Turnpike for commutes north into Pittsburgh, which is just about 40 miles away. I-70 also links South Huntingdon Township’s residents to Rostraver Township, roughly 8 miles west.
