Green space and small-town atmosphere
South Park Township offers a quiet atmosphere surrounded by green spaces just 12 miles from Pittsburgh. The township has a small-town feeling, says Missy Foltz, a 20-year South Park resident and Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty. The neat lawns, expansive park and well-regarded schools all boost this vibe. “It’s a suburb, but it also feels rural since It’s tucked away from major highways,” says Michelle Belice, a Realtor with Howard Hanna Real Estate Services. The township is a suburb that’s beaming with history and has the landmarks to prove it. The Whiskey Rebellion took place here in 1791 and has its own little piece of history to commemorate the event — Oliver Miller Homestead — which is the original stone house where Miller’s son first rebelled against George Washington, who was president at the time. After this insurrection, the area became what most Pittsburgh communities once were, coal mining towns. The U.S. Bureau of Mines still sits in South Park today but has been converted into office space.

It occurs every September and includes a petting zoo, games, live music and a dunk tank. “I participate every year in South Park Community Day. It’s a really neat event,” she says. South Park Amphitheater also has outdoor events and concerts throughout the year. Oliver Miller Homestead offers tours conducted by guides in 18th-century dress and is open on Sundays from May through December. The South Park Township Library offers various programs and events for all ages like Tween Book Club, Mini Musicians for younger children, and Gentle Fitness.
