The spirits of South Pittsburg

According to local legend, the Old South Pittsburg Hospital was built in 1959 over an underground spring on land originally settled by the Chiaha Native American tribe, the very same spot where Union soldiers were ambushed in 1863 during the Battle of Chickamauga. Abandoned in 1998 under dubious circumstances, the Old South Pittsburg Hospital now serves as a paranormal research center, widely considered the most haunted site in Tennessee. Ghost hunters from around the country visit for “overnight investigations,” where they are allegedly visited by paranormal specters from throughout South Pittsburg’s rich history.

Eclectic homes at friendly prices

South Pittsburg is situated inside a narrow stretch of the Sequatchie Valley between the Cumberland Mountains and the Tennessee River, with two steep ridges — Whitacre Point and Lodge Point — stretching outward from the plateau to surround the small city on three sides, creating a dramatic natural backdrop visible from the historic brick buildings lining South Pittsburgh's downtown district. Home buyers will find a wide range of residential architecture in South Pittsburg, including ranch, National-style bungalows, American Foursquares and shingle houses inspired by the asymmetrical forms of Queen Anne architecture. Homes typically sell for $200,000 to $300,000, far less than the average price throughout Marion County.

Outdoor adventures on the Cumberland Plateau

The community comes together at Loyd Park, a large municipal park at the foothills of the Cumberland Plateau with ballfields, tennis courts and a swimming pool. Loyd Park hosts the town’s youth baseball and football leagues and is also home to Playground Paradise, a colossal playground complex for children 12 and under. South Pittsburg Municipal Park sits on the banks of a slow-moving stretch of the Tennessee River, making it a popular spot from which paddlers and anglers can drop their boats into the water to paddle underneath the iconic Shelby Rhinehart Bridge. On rainy days, residents can take in a show at the Princess Theatre, a recently restored historic movie theater and concert venue, or admire the world’s largest cast iron skillet at the Lodge Museum of Cast Iron.
