Pine Point
Suburban Neighborhood in Cumberland County
Cumberland County 04074
Fisherman shacks and more extensive colonial revivals
Pine Point embodies the spirit of a small coastal village. The neighborhood primarily consists of Cape Cods, Colonial revivals and cottages, with sizes ranging from tiny homes with less than 200 square feet while other homes that may have over 2,500 square feet of space. Prices vary to match the size of the house, ranging from $400,000 to $1-2 million dollars. Homes are often on smaller lots, with the homes themselves taking up the majority of the space, with grass and small gardens accentuating most homes. Many homes have been expanded and updated but have “kept the character of the fishing village, which is nice,” Thurlow says. Some of Maine’s larger attractions
Pine Point Beach, the area's namesake, is 4 miles long, making it “one of the largest beaches in Maine,” Thurlow says. It has everything residents could want from a public beach, including bike and kayak rentals, quick snack places, restaurants and plenty of room to run around and play games. The beach is next to Old Orchard Beach but has unique qualities in that “the sand is much finer and whiter, and the city cleans the beach each year of seaweed,” Thurlow says. The area is also popular for windsurfers, and seeing them out on the water is a common sight. The busy beach offers a 350-space parking lot and street parking to ensure everyone fits. Residents are also close to Bayley’s Campground, one of the larger campgrounds in Maine that offers space for cabins, big rigs and tents, as well as highly rated activities programs, pools and dining.Scarborough Public Schools
Scarborough is known for having one of Maine's top public-school systems, with students beginning at Blue Point Primary School, which receives a B rating on Niche. Students then move on to the A-rated Wentworth School for grades three through five before going to Scarborough Middle School and finishing up at Scarborough High School. The high school was the first in the Scarborough area, built in 1927, and offers 26 varsity teams. Both the middle and high school earn a B-plus rating on Niche.4th of July Parada and Strawberry Shortcake Feast
One of the larger events in the area, which Thurlow himself partially organizes, is the annual 4th of July Parada and Strawberry Shortcake Feast. At the event, locals gather by the fire station and can participate in the Kids Fun Run, which has medals for all who participated. They will also enjoy a parade of displays by local groups and organizations. “The parade is only about 10 minutes, but everyone gets to socialize and eat strawberry shortcakes provided by local businesses,” Thurlow says. The event has been growing, and the area has seen “hundreds of people come each year.”An easily walkable coastal neighborhood
Being only about a mile long, Pine Point is unique as “It's an easy walk everywhere,” or for more inclement weather, there is a “good bus system and a trolley from Bayley’s Campground,” Thurlow says. Many visitors and residents can be seen walking to stores, restaurants or the beach on any given day. Car travel is also easy for Pine Point residents as the neighborhood is about 15 miles outside Scarborough’s downtown district and 2 miles from the heart of Old Orchard Beach. Locals can quickly get to Route 1 and I-95 for farther trips, especially with Portland International Jetport being just 11 miles to the north. The Maine Medical Center is 13 miles to the north for medical care.Fresh seafood and BBQ
In Pine Point, residents are always close to a lobster or some shellfish. Locals can stop by popular restaurants like Clambake Seafood, which seats over 700 and has been “famous over the years for very large portions.” Thurlow says, “It also has really good baked seafood as well, not just fried.” The Garage BBQ is another local hotspot that is a recent addition to the neighborhood, which used to be the village's gas station. The owners, who also own Bayley’s Lobster Pound, ensured they “kept the gas station theme,” Thurlow says, providing a '60s feel and helping keep the area's history alive. Meals with a view can be found at The Bait Shed, which offers residents a “nice old wharf to sit out on,” Thurlow says. Locals can stock up the pantry at Beach House Market & Deli or the Walmart 8 miles north.
