South Rosemary offers country living close to Lake Gaston
Only one stoplight controls traffic in South Rosemary, a rural enclave straddling U.S. Route 158 in Halifax County . The community, about 10 miles from Lake Gaston and even closer to Roanoke Rapids Lake, appeals to those who love the outdoors and want a slower pace and more space without sacrificing access to the job opportunities, culture and entertainment nearby in the city of Roanoke Rapids. “You’re on Interstate 95, so it’s convenient, but the lakes are the main draw,” says Scott Watson , a longtime resident of the area and a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Advantage. He says the region, bustling with Lake Gaston vacationers in the spring and summer, sees a shift in the fall and winter months. “The fall is probably the nicest time of year because of the leaves changing and it’s quiet. It’ll take a little while to get used to it if you’re from the city,” Watson says.
The Center for Energy Education operates a large solar farm in the heart of South Rosemary. In addition to having a fire station, an animal hospital and some local businesses, the community has seven churches representing various Christian denominations, including Baptist and Methodist.

When South Rosemary residents want to spend time in nature, Roanoke Rapids Lake and Lake Gaston are often where they end up. Both lakes have day-use areas with boat launches, swimming beaches and picnic shelters. “Roanoke Rapids Lake is purely recreational. There are no restaurants. It’s where you’d go if you’re looking to fish, go boating and water ski,” Watson says. “You’re not going to Watersview Restaurant or Shady Shack,” he adds, referring to two of the more popular dining destinations on the shores of Lake Gaston. “Lake Gaston is more of a vacation destination because of that.” An access point for the Roanoke River is about 5 miles from South Rosemary for reeling in rockfish. The Roanoke Canal Trail runs along the banks for scenic bike rides and hikes. Chockoyotte Country Club offers a private 18-hole course. Medoc Mountain State Park is around 20 miles away for more outdoor adventure, from hiking and horseback riding to mountain biking.
