An active community at the edge of the Missouri River
Across the Missouri River and the state line from Iowa’s fourth largest municipality, Nebraska’s South Sioux City is smaller and more suburban with a connection to outdoorsy recreation. The city’s population of about 14,000 is about a sixth of Sioux City’s to the north, with a sense of community that stands out, says Chelsea Easterling, membership coordinator at the South Sioux City Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism. “We are very local and we’re a small community that just really cares— I mean, there are more nonprofits in the area than there are businesses.”
With riverside restaurants, a trail system that runs through the city and a slate of events year-round, South Sioux City keeps moving, Easterling says. “We’re very active.’’
In South Sioux City most homes are blocks inland from the river, built on a network of gridded streets.

City parks and an avid cycling community
The Al Bengtson Trail Network features 22 miles of paved connecting trails and shared roadways throughout South Sioux City. The path curls along the river's edge before weaving through cornfields, swaths of deciduous trees, and residential areas. It was named after a city commissioner who championed bike trails in the city, and the system is open year-round – it gets plowed after snowfalls.
The city’s annual Mighty Mo Run is a series of road races of 5K, 10K and half-marathon lengths held in September. The routes cross the landmark Siouxland Memorial Veterans Bridge into Sioux City and return to their riverfront starting point.
South Sioux City is also home to eight parks featuring a mix of playgrounds, ball fields, trails, campsites and lake and river access. One of the most popular is Crystal Cove Park, a 100-acre nature retreat with a tree-lined lake at its center. Crystal Cove is also home to hiking trails and a disc golf course. The lake is stocked yearly for fishing and ice fishing. The Jeffery Dible Soccer Complex is a regional sports venue, built alongside the Missouri River.

The South Sioux dining scene comprises a mix of fast-food spots and sit-down restaurants with a few high-end eateries, such as Kahill's Chophouse. “It’s upscale, it’s swanky, it's beautiful and it overlooks the river,” says Easterling. Mexican food is also particularly popular, comprising a large portion of the restaurants.

Celebrando Siouxland
People come from far and wide to attend Celebrando Siouxland in September, a Hispanic heritage festival. “Every year, it gets bigger and bigger, and we just enjoy having it,” says Easterling. “There were about 8,000 visitors last year, and over half of them were not from the area.” She mentions that attendees even include visitors from out of state. This weeklong festival includes live music from a mariachi band and a parade.

Crime and climate
Flooding along the Missouri River is a risk, often as the result of upstream snowmelt and heavy rains. The city’s signature events take place in September when the region’s hot muggy weather is behind it and the cold, snowy season is still weeks away.
According to FBI data, the rates of reported violent crime and property crime in South Sioux City are lower than the Nebraska average and national average.
