There are nine parks in North Fork and some include beach access. Some parks in the Southold Park District are limited to tax-paying residents. Founders Landing Park is one of the parks that provides beach access and during the summer months, there is a lifeguard on duty. The park also has an event hall that can be rented. Inlet Pond County Park features a mature oak forest, a butterfly garden and a lush hiking trail. In the summer, the park’s pond is inhabited by bullfrog tadpoles. There are events almost daily in the community, including holiday celebrations, pop-up sales, paint-and-sip parties and wine tours. Veterans Beach hosts a yearly Lobsterfest, with proceeds benefitting the local Rotary Clubs. Elkin says one unique attribute of North Fork is that there are no chain stores once you reach the peninsula. All the shops are local businesses with over 60 storefronts across the region. Examples of the types of stores include Lydia’s Antique & Stained Glass and Marika’s Eclectic Boutique. Mattituck Marketplace and Mattituck Marketplace are two local grocery stores in North Fork. About Food is a Southold market offering an impressive selection of local products. Residents seeking a Target or Stop & Shop must make the 3-mile trek to Riverhead. There is a vibrant restaurant scene and Elkin says the community has developed a thriving “foodie scene.” A Lure Chowder House & Oysteria is North Fork’s spot to enjoy clam chowder and lobsters. Michelangelo Southold is a pizza parlor with ample seating and is one of 16 storefronts at the Feather Hill Village. North Fork also has 20 wineries, including Bedell Cellars and Meadowlark North FPlenty of extracurricular activities at Southold Union Free School District
Parents can send the kids to Southold Union Free School District schools with a 9-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio and a B-rating from Niche. Students start their education at Southold Elementary School, which also has a B-rating. Southold Junior/Senior High School has a B-minus rating from Niche. There are nearly 30 clubs at the school, ranging from chess to environmental awareness to robotics.
Getting to Long Island is a breeze
The Long Island Rail Road has two commuter train stations less than 10 minutes from the hamlet. Additionally, there are two bus stations in the community. North Road and Highway 25 are the main thoroughfares, connecting the neighborhood to Long Island.
