A small town outside Provo

Named for the river that winds through the city, Spanish Fork is a booming community outside of Provo. The small-town feel, with local businesses lining city streets, is a draw for residents, but even more so is the surrounding environment. The Wasatch Peaks dominate the horizon. Residents are close to hiking and skiing along trails offering views of Utah’s famous landscape. The city is growing with plans to expand as buyers seek to get closer to nature and out of large cities.

Old homes and new builds in Spanish Fork

"We're growing a lot," says Jack Urquhart, Public Information Officer for Spanish Fork. "We have a lot of people moving here from out of state who want to find a peaceful place to live or are people who are moving to be closer to family." As such the city's population has doubled in the past 25 years. A mix of houses make up the city's residential streets, with options from new condos to century-old Craftsman bungalows. "The city has been around for over a hundred years, so you do have some old homes," says Andrew Ford, Realtor with EXP Realty. "But it's not like everything is the same." Many properties include driveways and attached garages, and residents can enjoy the mountain views from modest-sized front and back yards. Homes sell for a median of $430,000. Options range from condos and townhouses from $300,000 to $600,000 to single-family homes selling from $345,000 and climbing over $2 million depending on how old it is and what kind of land it is on. "There is no developable land that isn't spoken for," says Urquhart. "As soon as there is land to develop, it's spoken for. We're going through a planning phase right now to balance keeping our hometown feel and giving people housing opportunities."

Wasatch Mountains, Spanish Fork River and city parks

“One of the biggest draws is the geography,” says Urquhart. “Spanish Fork is a beautiful place. We’re right by the canyon. People hike. People golf. People ski. It’s a real paradise for outdoor lovers.” The city prioritizes preserving green space, which is evident by its six community parks, eight neighborhood parks, four specialty parks and eleven mini-parks. All across town, residents can find playgrounds, baseball diamonds and pickleball courts, hiking trails and picnic pavilions. People can spend time at one of two dog parks with their four-legged friends, practice tricks at the skate park or trapshooting at the gun club park. The Spanish Fork River Trail is a popular, paved path that runs 7 miles from the mouth of Spanish Fork Canyon to the downtown area. Gateway Parks Spanish Fork offers tubing and skiing in town, and nearby Provo is known for its ski trails. On warm summer days, residents head to Spanish Oaks Reservoir to cool down in the water.

Kids attend Nebo School District

Nebo School District, which serves Spanish Fork, gets an overall score of B from Niche. Most kids in Spanish Fork attend a progression of schools right in the community. Spanish Fork High School, the city’s predominant high school, earns a B and has the Dons as a mascot, modeled on the Spanish conquistadors. Sports rivalry between the area schools runs hot, turning football games into significant events. For those seeking to continue their education, Mountainland Technical College has a campus in Spanish Fork, and Brigham Young University is 10 miles away in Provo.

Shopping and dining off the highways

Main Street and Highway 6 are the main shopping and dining thoroughfares. Local and chain restaurants, from Mexican and sports bars to drive-thrus, line the streets. Glade’s Drive Inn was a gas station until 1954, when it started serving burgers and its signature white sauce. Jurassic Street Tacos is a fast-casual joint with a dinosaur theme. There isn’t much in the way of upscale dining in the city, as most restaurants cater to a more family-friendly atmosphere. Adjacent to Interstate 15 and Highway 6, big box stores like Costco Wholesale, Walmart and Target keep locals stocked with groceries and other household essentials. Intermountain Health Spanish Fork Hospital also operates just off the interstate.

Access to the interstate and state highways

Though the sidewalks are handy for going from house to house, Spanish Fork is too big to be walkable, so residents need cars to get around the city or beyond it. Interstate 15 and Routes 6, 51 and 89 run through the city. Route 198 becomes Main Street within Spanish Fork city limits. Since Main Street is the main traffic artery in town, it’s easily congested. Traffic is heavy throughout the day and especially bad during rush hour. The drive to Provo is a little under 10 miles and takes around 15 minutes, depending on traffic. Lehi City and Salt Lake City are a little farther north, about 25 and 50 miles North of Spanish Fork, respectively. Public transit options are limited, but a few Utah Transit Authority buses connect Spanish Fork to Provo. “One thing we have in Utah is the FrontRunner, a commuter passenger train,” says Urquhart. “They’re building a station in Spanish Fork, which will be good for commuters.” While there are employment opportunities in the city, many commute to major employment hubs.

Fun at the Fiesta Days Rodeo

Urquhart says Spanish Fork is a family-oriented community, and the city tries catering to citizens of all ages. Harvest Moon Hurrah is a free event held every autumn that features food trucks, vendors, live entertainment, and activities. Fiesta Days Rodeo is one of the longest-running events, having been a summer staple for more than 80 years. In addition to traditional rodeo events like bull riding and cattle roping, it also offers fireworks and a parade.

Crime in Spanish Fork

The rates of violent and property crime in Spanish Fork are lower than both the state and national averages. Property crime peaked in late 2022 and violent crime also peaked in late 2020.
The city experiences hot summers and snow winters, with more than two feet falling each year.
