Historic, walkable charm near downtown in Browne’s Addition

Neighborhood signs welcome you to Browne’s Addition, a historic community south of the Spokane River. Century-old mansions have been converted into apartments and condos along its tree-lined streets, blocks from the trendy restaurants near scenic Coeur d’Alene Park. Thanks to neighborhood beautification efforts and popular annual events, Browne’s Addition has developed a modern reputation for architectural interest and convenience – the same things it offered residents more than a century ago. All of this is a quick walk, bike or bus ride from the commuter and cultural destinations of City Center Spokane.

What historic single-family homes and condos typically cost

Browne’s Addition was built as a suburban enclave for Spokane’s 19th - and 20th-century elite. It’s still full of many of the ornate Craftsman and Victorian homes built for these families around the turn of the century. Today, however, many have been converted into condos or apartment buildings. You’ll also see newer, high-density apartment and condo buildings around the neighborhood. Condos come on the market most often, selling from the lower $100,000s to the upper $300,000s. Single-family homes come on the market less often, and can sell from the upper $300,000s to over $1 million depending on their size, renovations and whether they have views of the Spokane River.

Browne’s Addition has a median single-family home price in the lower $400,000s. That’s higher than neighboring communities like Peaceful Valley, Downtown Spokane and West Central but lower than Cliff-Cannon.

Walkable streets with quick access to downtown Spokane

"Usually, you get people moving to Browne's Addition that want an area that's walkable, convenient and close to work,” says Jo Skipper, a broker at AREA who’s served eastern Washington and northern Idaho for 13 years. Downtown Spokane and many of the city’s medical and education institutions are within a mile or two of home. You can get there by foot, bike or Spokane Transit Authority bus. Interstate 90 runs just south of Browne’s Addition for those driving out of the city. Parking isn’t typically an issue, whether you’re street parking or using an off-street lot. It might be harder to find a good spot when there’s an event at Coeur d'Alene Park or the Northwestern Museum of Arts & Culture.

Close to community parks and a state-line-crossing trail

Coeur d’Alene Park is the heart of Browne’s Addition, and was the first public park in the city. Locals love playing tennis and basketball, taking kids to the playground and splash park, relaxing under the gazebo or walking along tree-shaded paths. Browne’s Addition is also within a mile of a nearly 40-mile paved walking and biking path. "Centennial Trail is right there, it features beautiful views of downtown, the river and the falls," Skipper says. "I love that about Spokane. There's such proximity to mountains, trails and recreation, but you still get a city vibe."

A renter-friendly neighborhood known for farmers markets and the MAC

Browne's Addition appeals to people looking for walkability and convenience to local and city centers. It’s especially popular with renters and young professionals. Residents from all walks of life get together at Coeur d’Alene Park for weekly farmers markets through the warmer months, ready to browse produce and artisan goods while listening to live music. The Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture is another neighborhood gem. Also called the MAC, it’s a Smithsonian affiliate that houses many traveling exhibits and hosts Spokane’s bustling ArtFest street fair each year.
