Oldest planned community in Spokane
Emerson Garfield, 2 miles from Downtown Spokane, is one of the oldest planned communities in the area. It began as a racetrack for everything from bike riding to horse racing. D.C. Corbin, a railroad and mining tycoon, purchased the land in 1899 and planned a residential community surrounding the old racetrack. The neighborhood may have historical roots, but it sports one of the central shopping and dining locations apart from Downtown Spokane. “Monroe is the main thoroughfare for that area,” says resident Kristin Beck. “It runs straight down the middle and has many bars, restaurants and coffee shops. I like that stretch because there are many places to go."
Monroe Street
Monroe Street is where everything from grocery stores to bus stops can be found. It is within walking or biking distance from most homes in the Emerson Garfield area and a favorite among locals. Karma Indian Cuisine offers visitors Indian fare and desserts in a dimly lit modern setting with a bar and lounge. Across the street is Gerardo’s Authentic Mexican Food, which offers a drive-thru, large portions and carne asada burritos. Elliotts an urban kitchen offers modern American fare and occasional live music. A local chain, Ladder Coffee Roasters, promises beans ethically roasted in Spokane and serves brunch foods and seasonal pastries. For a night on the town, locals visit Prohibition Gastropub, which also offers brunch and a cocktail of the month. A favorite sports bar in the area is The Hub Tavern. “People are friendlier here,” says Beck. “There’s this old-school Hockey bar; people shout at you when you walk in and it’s cash only. You can’t sit down and have no one talk to you. Someone will buy you a drink.”
Riverfront Park and Lilac Bloomsday Run
Residents attend events in Downtown Spokane, where visitors may watch a show at the Metropolitan Theater/Opera House or explore Riverfront Park. On May 5th, the Lilac Bloomsday Association, whose goal is to promote fitness and social improvement, hosts the Lilac Bloomsday Run, where thousands participate in a 12-kilometer race. Registration fees go to a local charity. There are also several concert and event venues in the area. Across the river is the Spokane Arena, where locals can see a concert, monster truck show or a wrestling match. The Spokane Pavilion is an outdoor amphitheater in Riverfront Park that hosts live events under a spider web of lights.

Corbin Park and Emerson Park
Corbin Park, previously a 40-acre racetrack, is a favorite gathering place, with a large lawn for picnicking, a play area, a tennis court and a basketball court. Across the neighborhood is Emerson Park. This casual green space offers a simple lawn with picnic tables, a basketball court and a playground. The park is also close to the Spokane River, where residents can walk or bike along the Centennial Trail that follows the river's path.
Route 2 and Spokane Airport
“The roads are vast, and the city is very flat,” says Beck. “It could be an incredible biking city, but it has no infrastructure.” Though there are limited bike lanes, it is possible to bike in the area, but there is a large population of Lime Scooters. The area is mainly car-dependent, with Route 2 bordering the neighborhood. The area has bus stops, primarily on Monroe Street, which lead into downtown. Spokane Airport is 6 miles away and Spokane International Airport is 8 miles away.
Important to know
The main thoroughfare in the area is Monroe Street, and it is also the noisiest. “Once you get off Monroe, it’s super quiet,” says Beck. For those looking to attend religious services, residents can attend Spokane Korean Church of Glory to God, Holy Temple Church of God in Christ, Spokane Hope Christian Church and others in the area.
