Cozy suburban lifestyle close to central Spokane

Set along the east bank of the Spokane River, Northwest Spokane is a quiet, suburban landing spot that’s right next to Riverside State Park and not too far from Downtown. “It’s just a comfortable place to live,” says Realtor Steven Silbar with John L. Scott Real Estate, who has worked in the area for nearly a decade. “It feels like a quiet little residential pocket, but it’s incredibly easy to get from the neighborhood to Downtown. And the parks and trails along the river are just gorgeous.

Midcentury and Modern Homes

Residential streets in Northwest Spokane often feel secluded from the rest of the city, a product the tall pines that dot the landscape . Most properties were built in the early to mid-20th century. Midcentury ranches and split-levels can be found throughout the neighborhood, while more modern, spacious builds are increasingly common. Many residences offer larger yards, perfect for pools and entertainment spaces. Planned communities with Cape Cod revivals are a feature here, along with some brand-new construction that offers luxury living opportunities. Prices range from $285,000 for a smaller, older home to $800,000 for new construction. It's one of the more budget-friendly communities in Spokane, making it perfect for first-time buyers.

Education in Northwest Spokane

Students here attend Spokane Public Schools, such as Browne Elementary School, which has a B-minus grade on Niche. In addition to preschool and after-school care, students can attend Browne Summer Camp so that families can benefit from care year-round. At recently opened Flett Middle School, students can participate in clubs and learning labs with 3-D printing, animation and woodshop activities. Shadle Park High School has a B grade on Niche and offers a comprehensive college and career readiness program that assists with college applications, financial aid and career exploration pathways. The school is also adjacent to the Shadle Park Aquatic Center and Shadle Park Library, so this busy campus is always bustling with people and activities.

Nearby Riverside State Park

Located close to the Spokane River, the neighborhood is known for its gorgeous riverfront parks and other green spaces. Riverside State Park offers acres of scenic woodland with trails that meander throughout and alongside the majestic river. Picturesque rock formations like the Bowl and Pitcher and crystal-clear water make this destination a favorite. Carson Park is another go-to. Attached to the Dwight Merkel Sports Complex there are athletic fields, a skate park, a BMX park and a playground with a splash pad. For a more casual outdoor space, Westgate Park has a small play area, basketball court and tennis court. It's located next to a secluded woodland where residents can hike through trails underneath the canopy of mossy forest.

Iconic restaurants and convenient shopping

Although the neighborhood can feel secluded, Northwest Spokane is less than 5 miles from Downtown, making it a convenient home-buying location for those seeking to live close to employers and amenities. There are also a number of shopping centers located along the neighborhood’s major arterial roads, Francis Avenue and Wellesley Avenue. A Walmart and Safeway in the center of the neighborhood make for easy shopping. While the neighborhood doesn’t have an extensive dining scene, it does happen to be home to some of Spokane’s most popular restaurants, including Outlaw BBQ, Little Garden Cafe, Das Stein House, and iconic Spokane pizzeria Flying Goat.

Getting around Spokane

"The neighborhood feels secluded but is well-connected, so it's easy for residents to get around town without a long commute," Realtor and Spokane resident Haydn Halsted says. It’s a pretty straightforward 4- to 5-mile drive from Northwest Spokane to Downtown via Northwest Boulevard. Multiple bus routes pass along Francis Avenue and Wellesley Avenue, mostly offering direct routes to central or north Spokane. Spokane International Airport is less than 10 miles from the neighborhood by car, and the neighborhood’s location on the west edge of the city limits lets residents sidestep traffic when driving there.
