A swiftly redeveloping neighborhood
West Central Spokane, often referred to as West Central, embodies Spokane’s long history of development, community resilience, and ongoing revitalization. Situated along the north bank of the Spokane River just northwest of downtown Spokane, the neighborhood offers a mix of urban and natural settings. After decades of stagnant housing prices, the neighborhood has recently undergone something of a renaissance, with housing prices jumping dramatically. “The area is developing a bunch, with lots of new restaurants and places to live being built up quickly,” says resident Tasha Cain of the local non-profit Spokane Teachers Credit Union. Housing prices, which just 5 years ago were among the lowest of any neighborhood in Spokane, are now about average for the city, or, in the case of Kendall Yards homes, well above average.
Renovated historic homes
West Central showcases a diverse array of housing options that reflect its historical and evolving character. Architectural styles range from Victorian-era homes, many of which have been meticulously restored to preserve their historical value, to more modest mid-20th-century bungalows and newer apartment complexes. This mix of old and new reflects the neighborhood’s evolution from a working-class community to a Downtown-adjacent hotspot. Recent efforts have focused on revitalizing older properties, with an emphasis on affordable housing to maintain the neighborhood’s inclusive character. Most homes in the neighborhood sell for $250,000 to $500,000, though prices for historic Victorian mansions and modern homes in the vibrant Kendall Yards area in the southeastern part of the neighborhood can reach nearly seven figures.

Kendall Yards dining scene
While West Central is primarily residential, there are commercial areas along main thoroughfares such as Monroe and Maple Street, which both feature a variety of longstanding local shops and newer restaurants, cafes and breweries. The area's dining scene is among the best in the city. This is due in part to Kendall Yards, a recent upscale housing, shopping and dining development along the southern edge of West Central, which has become a culinary hotspot. It features multiple always-busy eateries like The Yards Bruncheon and Umi Kitchen and Sushi Bar. “Spokane might feel like a small city, but it has a big city food scene,” says Cain. Locals can pick up groceries at My Fresh Basket in Kendall Yards and do their shopping just across the river in Downtown Spokane.

Centennial Trail and A.M. Cannon Park
There are a number of city parks and playgrounds in the neighborhood, including the popular A.M. Cannon Park and Aquatic Center and Dutch Jake’s Park, the latter of which was named for a legendary local impresario who, coincidentally used to regularly fire off cannons from the rooftop of his hotel in Downtown Spokane. However, West Central’s most popular recreational areas are the multi-use trails that run along the Spokane River, which borders the southern and western sides of the neighborhood. The Centennial Trail is the largest and best-known of these—it runs 37 miles along the Spokane River, from the Idaho Border all the way to Nine Mile Falls north of Spokane, and is by far the most popular recreational trail in the Inland Northwest.
