Quiet, historic riverside community
Located along the banks of the Schuylkill River between Philadelphia and Reading, Spring City is a quiet, old Pennsylvania borough with a Main Street occupied by rows of locally owned businesses. “Our Main Street is starting to come back thanks to local revitalization efforts,” says Amy Keller, a library assistant at the Spring City Public Library who has lived in the area for over 30 years. “A few businesses have been here a long time, and the older population is shifting to younger people because of our great school district.” Named for the prevalence of natural springs in the area, Spring City was once a small industrial hub with papermills and a glass-making factory, spurred by the development of the Schuylkill Canal in the mid-1800s.
The Spring City residential area lots get larger and single family homes are more common.

Music takes center stage in Spring City
Originally a silent film theater and vaudeville hall built in 1908, The Gem has evolved into a concert venue and recording studio that serves bar food favorites in front of an intimate stage. The Spring-Ford Diner offers a quieter experience with nostalgic decor and home-cooked meals from chicken and waffles to the Spring-Ford Chicken Sandwich. Tuned Up Brewing is just a few more blocks down Main Street. In addition to being business partners who started crafting brews at home, two of the three founders also play in a local rock band called The Fermentors.
Local musicians frequent George’s Music, a regional employee-owned chain that opened its first location on Main Street in 1977. “A lot of people around here know about George’s,” Keller says. “They teach music lessons and sell instruments and have been here for over 30 years.” The Spring City Public Library also plays a significant role in the community. The library hosts everything from community programs to events for children to the annual Christmas tree lighting. “The library has been here for over 100 years, and it’s definitely the hub of the community,” Keller says.

Old brick homes
While the local industries contracted or vanished entirely along with the canal in the 20th century, the community has retained its character with old Victorian and Colonial-style home duplexes and row homes made of brick. In addition to the historic properties, the area includes a mix of single-family Cape Cods, ranch-style houses and new developments. Modest townhouses go for between $200,000 and $300,000. On the pricier side, a 2,700-square-foot single-family home with four bedrooms in the Villages at Spring Hill development starts at $680,000. There are about 1,580 total homes in the neighborhood and the average number of days on the market for Spring City is only a handful compared to the significantly higher national average.

Pools, splash pads and river trails
Next to the school, kids play ball in the area’s youth baseball league and also gather to play games and splash around in the Brown Street Neighborhood Park community pool. Closer to downtown, residents can hop on the Schuylkill River Trail to explore the waterfront close to home. “We have great outdoor things to do here, and the river trail is a big one,” Keller says. “It runs from Philly, passes through here and eventually ends up north of Reading. It’s a very active trail and especially popular with hikers, bikers and dog walkers. It’s still growing too. They just added some new sections.”

Bus stops and highways make travel easy
There are multiple bus stops along New Street and Spring City residents also have access to the nearby Highway 422 which can take them 30 miles southeast into Downtown Philadelphia. “I’d definitely say we’re a bedroom community for Philly because it’s so easy to get on route 422 and go anywhere,” Keller says. “It’s just a really good location halfway between Philly and Reading.”
