A18th-century iron hub

Spring Grove’s story starts in 1747 on the banks of Codorus Creek. Sandwiched between York City and Hanover, this neighborhood was a hub for the iron industry. In the 1770s, an iron manufacturer established a forge at what is now known as Spring Grove. Early German and English woodchoppers flocked to the area to get in on the action and are the forebearers of the neighborhood that still exists today. By the 19th century, the community produced almost 200 tons of iron bars annually. By the mid-1800s, the iron business had waned, and the community pivoted to manufacturing paper. Glatfelter Paper Mill became incredibly successful, and the company thrives to this day. Today, Spring Grove maintains a small-town vibe while being a stone's throw from dining, shopping, and entertainment.

Everything from historic farmhouses to condominium communities

Colonial-style homes dominate the area, with Craftsman-style estates, Cape Cod houses, ranch-style homes, historic farmhouses and townhomes also comprising the area. Roth’s Farm Village offers condominium units to the 55-plus crowd. Spring Grove is also home to some historic farmhouses from the early 1900s. These homes sit on several wooded acres and are ideal for wildlife enthusiasts who may enjoy catching sight of wild deer or turkey. Home prices in the area range from $120,000 to $667,000.

A trolley line-turned walking trail

Spring Grove Community Park offers a playground, pavilion, volleyball court, baseball field, basketball court and walking path. Local youth and amateur teams flock to the park to practice and compete. Canine companions can run around the dog park, which has separate areas for both small and large dogs. Residents can also access the 3.5-mile Hanover Trolley Trail, which crosses through Spring Grove. In the early 1900s, the trolley lines of the York Railway Company served the area’s travel needs. The Hanover Fast Line opened in 1908 and was a popular travel method for residents of York County. Of course, with the invention and wild popularity of cars, the trolley soon became a thing of the past, closing down in 1938. Today, the Hanover trolley line has been transformed into a walking trail that continues to be expanded. Little Creek Park, spanning 43 acres, is also nearby. Athletic fields, rain gardens, a pavilion, a toddler play area and an ADA-compliant walking trail were part of the park’s first development phase. With phase two came basketball and pickleball courts, fences and landscaping. Baseball and football fields, a renovated clubhouse and a playground are well on their way in the subsequent few phases of development.
