From iron mining to farming in Gregg Township

Sitting in the Appalachian Mountains, Gregg Township is a rural community in Centre County made up of farmland and bordered by massive state forests. The county was created from parts of the surrounding Huntingdon and Northumberland counties after the American Revolutionary War. In the late 1700s, the iron mining industry began and was a major export for over a century. As the local iron industry declined, farming became the main business for the area. Over the past 30 years, there has been an increase in the number of large, single-family homes in the township. “Most of the surrounding land is still farming or residential,” says Jeanine Schleiden Watson, executive business director of Penn’s Cave, Inc, a popular township attraction.

Hiking and swimming at Poe Valley State Park

Penn's Cave and Wildlife Park offers guided boat tours of the popular limestone cave. The park, which has been open since 1885, also features an animal safari and a labyrinth. “It takes approximately three hours to go through both tours,” says Watson. Poe Valley State Park, located 5 miles east of the township, is a 620-acre green space surrounded by Poe Lake. The park gives access to 3 miles of trails as well as swimming and boating in the lake. The area is also less than 15 miles from the rest of Centre County’s recreation spots, including Tussey Mountain for skiing and the Nittany Country Club with its 18-hole golf course.

Gregg Township's 1800s national-style homes start in the $200,000s

Homebuyers can find a cluster of national and farmhouse-style homes from the 1800s and ranch-style homes from the mid-1900s in the Spring Mills community. Homes here typically sell for $200,000 to $400,000. Throughout the rest of Gregg Township, farmhouse-style homes from the 1800s and contemporary styles from the 2000s sit on lots ranging from 2 to 20 acres. These homes usually go for $400,000 to $1 million. Houses in the township do not go on the market often and tend to sell in less than a month. The CAP Index gives Gregg a crime score of 1 out of 10, which is lower than the national average of 4.

Weeklong stays at the Grange Fair

The Centre County Grange Fair, held in nearby Centre Hall, is the only remaining tenting fair in the country. Every year, thousands camp on the fairgrounds in tents or RVs during the nine-day event. Running for over 150 years, the fair offers amusement rides, games, motorsport and equine events, vendors, food trucks and live music from different artists each night.

Commuting via Penns Valley Road

Gregg is heavily car-dependent because of its rural nature. Penns Valley Road, which runs through the middle of town, is the main road in and out of the area.
