Community centered around environmentalism

Home to the late marine biologist, environmentalist and writer Rachel Carson, Springdale, 17 miles from Pittsburgh, is a mainly residential and industrial area with hiking trails and gridded streets. Residents may make an appointment to visit the Historic Rachel Carson Homestead, a simple white colonial surrounded by green fields and wildflowers. Carson’s knowledge of scientific environmentalism is shared through programs and summer day camps that emphasize nature and community service. Residents can step away from their homes in Springdale and explore over 40 miles of hiking trails in the rural Orrville area.
