Springfield Township sees rising appeal among new residents
Springfield Township is coming into its own, experiencing a rebirth of sorts, as an influx of new blood flows in breathing new life, new energy and a new dynamic into this community of 24,000 or so. “It's got more of a blue-collar vibe. But there is an influx of white-collar professionals,” says Alec Schwartz, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services. As much as things change, some things remain the same. Pride still runs deep in this corner of the world and community spirit flows freely. “Here it has become a lot more desirable than it was in the past,” Schwartz adds.

Springfield offers city access with a close-knit suburban feel
Twelve miles southwest of Philadelphia, Springfield enjoys easy access to the city, but is far enough removed to have an altogether different feel from the Philly experience. Distance from the city doesn’t necessarily equate to distance from one’s neighbors. This is a dense suburb where neighbors are close enough to become friends and their homes share a distinctly similar feel. “Lot sizes are smaller, most of them are a half-acre and smaller. There are a lot of Cape Cods, a lot of brick Colonials. I call them cookie cutter colonials, they’re just these square, brick colonials, very simply laid out houses. Some are a little different, but they’re all over the place.”
The median home price in Springfield Township is $470,000. Houses here range from $300,000 to $600,000 and above. “Now a single starter home is pushing $500,000. That’s a recent trend,” says Schwartz. “There are still row homes or town homes starting in the low $300,000s, maybe even upper $200,000s. In the past few years, this whole part of Delaware County has become more expensive that’s for sure.”

Public and private school options across two districts
Springfield Township offers students a variety of public and private school options. Some students attend school in the Marple Newtown School District, while most students are enrolled in the Springfield School District. “Lately it’s gotten pretty high in the rankings,” Schwartz says. Strong school districts can drive home sales and ultimately home prices as well. Niche gives Springfield School District an A-plus. Students attend Sabold Elementary School, Richardson Middle School and Springfield High School. In the also highly regarded Marple Newtown School District, which Niche rates A, students attend Loomis Elementary School, Paxon Hollow Middle School and Marple Newtown Senior High School.

Recreation options include parks and a country club
For folks of all ages, there’s a wide range of activities and venues where people can breathe and let their hair down. Springfield has a wealth of parks including some in the township or just down the way in nearby communities. 22-acre Indian Rock Park is a natural environmental Park with picnic tables, playground equipment and basketball courts. Walsh Park isn’t so far away, offers similar amenities, plus has a baseball diamond, football and soccer fields. Springfield Country Club also offers residents a way to relax and get in some recreation.

Local festivals and fun days keep the calendar lively
Springfield hosts several year-round events to stitch together a sense of community. In the fall there’s an annual Family Fun Day, an event that boasts of being filled with fun, food and music. But the big draw around here is the St. Patrick’s Day Parade which is a favorite each March.
Restaurant options or shopping at Springfield Mall
When it’s time to eat, you’ll find a variety of well-known national restaurant chains on Baltimore Pike, which runs through Springfield. Or for something a little more personal you can try someplace like Heng’s Thai, offering classic and fusion Thai dishes with spiciness to your liking. If a stylish American setting with a spacious dining room and outdoor firepit is more to your liking, then Tavola Restaurant and Bar might meet your mood.
Once you’re ready to shop, Springfield has a mall that unsurprisingly is called Springfield Mall. You’ll find many of your familiar retail shops there. For groceries, Giant is a popular choice with multiple locations about town.
Springfield Diner offers casual meals in a cozy setting.
On a rainy day, spend the evening in Springfield Township Mall for shopping and dining options.

Easy commuting to Philadelphia
Rounding out the Springfield experience is how you get in and out of here. Schwartz calls the community “very commutable.” He says, “You can either get on the highway to get into the city or take a trolley line. Either way you’re in the city in a half an hour.”
