The city of Springfield was heavily affected in 2018 by Category 5 Hurricane Michael, which left homes and even the city hall destroyed. However, with help from the federal government, the city has been making strides in bringing back its parks and repairing damaged civic buildings. Dennis Nelson, a realtor with Keller Williams Success Realty, says the city’s central location between Callaway and Panama City helps make the area appealing. “It’s a good time to invest in the area,” he says.

Single-family homes and removed blight
The median price for homes in Springfield is $228,000, less than Panama City’s median, as well as the rest of Florida. Homes in the area are mainly single-family and include ranch-style, A-frames and bungalows. Plots of land are also for sale throughout Springfield. “The home values are very much affordable compared to the rest of the city,” Nelson says. Nelson says that many of the homes in Springfield were built in the 1950s and '60s, but new homes have been coming into the area. Nelson also noted that while Hurricane Michael devastated the region, houses were fixed and blighted areas were removed, leading to increased housing values in Springfield.

Heavy industry and Tyndall Air Force Base
Heavy industry is located on Springfield’s southern edge, which includes a chemical factory belonging to the Kraton Corporation. While a large paper mill also shuttered its doors in 2022, Nelson does warn that the south side is susceptible to smells from industry. Springfield is also 7 miles north of Tyndall Air Force Base, the area’s largest employer. In 2024, the city broke ground on a new city hall, police and fire station after suffering hurricane damage. The closest hospital to the city is Ascension Sacred Heart Bay, but smaller clinics are dotted throughout the area.
