Pasfield Park offers calm surroundings close to shops and dining

Pasfield Park Place is a quiet neighborhood close to golf courses and parks, including the northwestern corner of Springfield's Washington Park. "It was one of the first major parks in Springfield,” says Phil Chiles, a broker and Realtor with Keller Williams Capital, who was born and raised in Springfield. “It has a rose garden and a pond that allows some fishing. It’s a very popular park and is used for a variety of things." Pasfield Park Place is also near many employers, local shopping and restaurants, but still maintains a suburban feel compared to downtown Springfield.

Mix of bungalows and ranch-style houses with varied price points

Large oak trees shade the residential streets that are lined with sidewalks. Bungalows, bi-level and ranch-style homes are all common here. "Most of the homes are post World War II,” says Jim Fulgenzi, team leader of the Jim Fulgenzi Sales Force with Re/Max Professionals and Springfield native. “The area built up because of GIs coming home and the economic boom during the 1950s and ‘60s.” Homes under 2,000 square feet tend to range from about $75,000 to $200,000, while larger houses tend to sell for around $200,000 to $380,000. Homes stay on the market for an average of 12 days, significantly lower than the national average of 53 days. Nearly half of the neighborhood consists of renters.

Washington Park spans over 150 acres with gardens and summer concerts

The neighborhood is close to several parks, the public Pasfield Golf Course and the private Illini Country Club. Washington Park spans more than 150 acres, offering a playground, two artificial lagoons and athletic courts. The Velasco Tennis Center has 12 courts. "It was originally built in the early 20th century as a trolley stop," says Alexa Potts, general manager of the Washington Park Botanical Garden. "And people are still dropping in from all over the city."

The Washington Park Botanical Garden showcases over a thousand plant species from around the world. It also features a greenhouse and conservatory. The Thomas Rees Memorial Carillon serves as the venue for live musical shows on Wednesday through Sunday evenings during the summer months, in addition to the annual International Carillon Festival. The event invites carillon players from all over the world. Connected to Owen Marsh Elementary School, Schlitt Park features a baseball diamond that is often used by local Little Leaguers.

Illinois Route 97 links the neighborhood to downtown in a few miles

Some homes are within walking distance of nearby amenities, but locals mostly use cars to get around. Nearby Illinois Route 97 connects Pasfield Park Place to downtown Springfield in about 3 miles northeast. The OSF Children's Hospital of Illinois is just across Illinois Route 4, half a mile northwest. Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport is 4 miles north, just past the Oak Ridge Cemetery. For public transportation, residents can use the bus service provided by Sangamon Mass Transit District, which has stops on Monroe Street and Old Jacksonville Road. “You can get to most parts of town in 15 minutes, sometimes 20 minutes to the outer parts,” Fulgenzi says.

Dining ranges from local cafés to familiar chain restaurants

The neighborhood has pockets of retail and dining. Clocktower Village has local eateries and chains, like A&W Restaurant. The Lime Street Café opened in 1988 and often has live music on Friday and Saturday nights. West Monroe Street has a few restaurants and familiar franchises like County Market Groceries, but Fulgenzi says people in this area also grocery shop at Schnucks Montvale. White Oaks Mall and large retailers, like Target, are a few miles south. “Most of the larger chain restaurants are around the mall,” Chiles says. “That’s where most people are going.” The area also has entertainment options, including BounceTag amusement center and a movie theater.
