Pillsbury
Urban Pioneer Neighborhood in Springfield, Illinois
Sangamon County 62702
Fixer-upper bungalows
Over half of the area is dedicated to industrial construction, leaving only a quarter to single-family homes. Long lines of well-worn sidewalks connect the residential areas with bungalows and Cape Cod-style homes. Mature trees line the streets, though the looming presence of the Pillsbury Mill is often still visible on the horizon. Most streets have corresponding back alleys with driveways and single-car garages, while front lawns often equate to little more than 50 square feet of grass. While some homes can detract from the area’s aesthetics, many locals insist that it doesn’t equate to an overabundance of crime. “When you first look at it, parts seem a little run down,” says Shawn Gregory, Alderman of Springfield’s second ward. “But it isn’t crime ridden, and government incentives are starting to get some interest in bringing more businesses around.” Real estate prices range from the low $10,000s for homes needing renovation and empty lots to well-maintained homes in the mid-$60,000s.Catch a game at Robin Roberts Stadium
Located just north of the neighborhood is Lanphier Park, an athletics venue for professionals and amateurs alike. Equipped with picnic shelters, tennis courts and two full-sized basketball courts, it's also the home of Robin Roberts Stadium, a 5,200-seat baseball stadium that hosts the local minor league team, the Springfield Lucky Horseshoes.Renovations at Lanphier High
Students in the area can begin their education at Feitshans Elementary School, which has a C-minus on Niche, before heading to the C-rated Washington Middle School, known for their state-championship-winning track and field team. Older students can enroll at Lanphier High School, which has a C-plus and recently underwent a massive $100 million renovation. "What we've developed is a brand new facility that's built up like a junior college, as opposed to a high school," says Lanphier High School president Alicia Miller. "We're equipped to give these kids the tools they'll need for a career or college."Watch a musical at Legacy
Proximity to downtown Springfield offers residents access to all of their annual events, including theatrical performances at the Legacy, Springfield's oldest theater. Held every year since 1853, the Illinois State Fair is a summer mainstay event filled with food, live music and plenty of rides.A mile from downtown
Being bordered by North 9th Street on its west side allows easy access to downtown Springfield and St. John's Hospital, both located 1 mile southwest. The Sangamon Mass Transit District provides a bus service that travels throughout Springfield and Sangamon County for a $1.25 fare, with stops on Carpenter Street and 11th Street. The Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport can be found 4 miles northwest.Get a smash burger at Krekels
Established in 1949, Krekel's Custard and Hambugers offers a classic burger joint atmosphere, complete with neon lights, multi-colored soft serve, and smash burgers in brown paper sacks. This local favorite forms a line fast, but service is quick enough for most. Save A Lot and Walgreens are both 2 miles southeast, while retail options can be found at the Sangamon Center North, less than 2 miles northeast.
