A peaceful east Springfield enclave

Located on Springfield’s east side, Pine Point is a small neighborhood split by two busy roads: Boston Road, Springfield’s main commercial corridor, and Berkshire Avenue. Despite being on the main route from Springfield to Boston in the 1800s, Pine Point remained sparsely inhabited until the turn of the century. Today, interspersed among the bungalows and cape houses of Pine Point are apartment buildings, townhomes and condominiums, all in a highly convenient area.

“Pine Point sits very close to I-95, the major highway, and it’s just a few minutes down the road from downtown Springfield, MGM Grand Casino and a lot of jobs, shops, and stores,” says Richard “Rich” Lovely, owner of Live Lovely Realty who calls nearby Holyoke his hometown and has sold homes all over the Pioneer Valley. “If you head further in the opposite direction into Wilbraham, they used to have a mall that got converted to another large shopping facility on Wilbraham Road, and there’s also 16 Acres, all minutes from each other. It’s close to everything virtually.”

Craftsman bungalows meet apartments and condos

Pine Point is known for its American Craftsman bungalows, many built in the early 1900s. The neighborhood would see another wave of home development around 1950, with ranch and cape houses being the predominant style of choice. What the neighborhood lacks in sidewalks and yard space, it makes up for in space for colorful bushes or a shed, as well as mature tree cover. Most options range in price from $250,000 to $400,000.

Shopping and dining on Boston Road.

Pine Point residents love the easily accessible restaurants and shops that line most of Boston Road. There are at least three Irish pubs in Pine Point, a nod to previous generations of Irish immigrants that lived in the area. Mainstays like Tony's Pizza and Restaurant hold down the fort, while Price Rite Marketplace of Springfield offers competitive deals on produce and more. As they travel further west on this main thoroughfare, locals reach larger shopping centers that feature chain grocery stores like Walmart and retail locations like Lowes and Petco.

From Five Mile Pond to Breckwood Park

While many locals go slightly outside the neighborhood to visit large, well-known parks. “One that I used to go to as a kid is Five Mile Pond Park,” recalls Lovely. Beachfront views aside, a few neighborhood parks within Pine Point draw daily visitors. Breckwood Park sits at the southeastern edge of the neighborhood and offers both paved and unpaved wooded pathways near Breckwood Lake. White Cedar Bog presents a unique display of plants and wildlife and includes walking trails.

Getting to downtown Springfield

Situated only 3 miles from Springfield’s city center, residents of Pine Point have easy access to almost everything the city offers. “Bus routes are great there,” Lovely says. “It’s easy enough to get in the car and go, but if you don’t have one, you’re still all set.” Residents can access Interstate 291 and other major highways in minutes. Save for Westover Air Reserve Base—8.5. miles away—residents can head to Bradley International Airport for most commercial flights. Mercy Medical Center and Baystate Medical Center each sit about 5 miles west, as well.
