Bingham
Authentic Springfield flavor at local restaurants
A mix of national chain and local restaurants can be found on Glenstone Avenue on the west side of the neighborhood. George's Family Restaurant offers a homey vibe and is known for its classic breakfast food. Casper's Diner is another hot spot, serving its famous chili since 1909, while currently decked out in 1970s décor. Locals also enjoy dining at Ichiban Buffett, an all-you-can-eat restaurant serving Japanese and Chinese dishes, including the local favorite Springfield Cashew Chicken. Local grocery stores include a Costco, Walmart Neighborhood Market and Leslie's Mexican Supermarket, which sells and serves authentic Mexican food.Competitive spirts welcome at Cooper Park
Bingham residents have several parks nearby for some outdoor recreation. George Washington Carver Park offers a scenic space to walk through the woods and over creek bridges. Oak Grove Park is about 1.5 miles south of the neighborhood and has a community center with a basketball court, climbing wall and ping pong tables. The park features a playground, outdoor basketball courts and a challenging disc golf course. About 1.5 miles north of the neighborhood is Cooper Park, a large athletic complex with several baseball, softball and soccer fields used by local leagues. The park is also home to the Cooper Tennis Complex, which includes several indoor and outdoor courts. Baseball fans will enjoy spending their summer evenings watching the Springfield Cardinals minor league team play at Hammons Field. The St. Louis Cardinals affiliate hosts several promotions throughout the season, including bobblehead giveaways, discounted food items and fireworks.Midcentury homes in the middle of Springfield
Bingham is home to quiet, tree-lined neighborhood streets dotted with ranch-style houses. Cook says most of the homes have been around a while. "There's mostly three-bedroom, two-bathroom homes in the area. They're mostly from the 1960s and 1970s, nothing super modern," he says. Houses have a mix of brick, stone and wood exteriors and often have built-in garages. Many are built about 5 to 10 feet from each other on similar quarter-acre lots with lots of trees and fenced-in backyards. Most streets have sidewalks, giving residents walkable space to stroll through the neighborhood. Three-bedroom homes typically sell between $135,000 and $250,000. Four-bedroom homes are rare but can cost between $250,000 and $300,000.Convenient access to Springfield schools
A majority of students attend Bingham Elementary School, which gets a B-minus grade from Niche and is located right in the neighborhood. They'll go on to Hickory Hills K-8 School, which also receives a B-minus, but is about 5 miles away in the more rural area of Greene County. Most students will finish their degrees at Glendale High, which gets a B grade. However, some who live in the northwest section of Bingham attend Central High, which gets an A-minus grade and is ranked the best public high school in Springfield. The high school offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, along with Missouri's A+ Scholarship Program, where qualified high schoolers can earn free college tuition by tutoring younger students.
Easy access to downtown and Schoolcraft Freeway
Grand Street, Cherry Street, Walnut Street and Chestnut Expressway all take residents 3 miles west to downtown. Schoolcraft Freeway is just east of the neighborhood and gives residents a 3-mile drive north to Interstate 44, which can take them northeast through Missouri or southwest to Oklahoma. Residents can also access City Utilities bus stops on Chestnut Expressway, Cherry Street and Glenstone Avenue to get around the east side of the city and downtown.
