From its massive parks to its wide assortment of shops and restaurants, it seems there’s a little something for just about everyone in Squirrel Hill South. This neighborhood is part of what’s considered the most populous area of the city, and residents here have a lot to enjoy. Even with its abundance of amenities, Squirrel Hill South maintains an easygoing atmosphere and is full of what Chris Grauzer, owner of the neighborhood’s Jerry’s Records, describes as a very diverse populace. “I think it has a good mix of residential and business areas,” Grauzer says. “It’s quiet but there are a lot of great restaurants in the area. And nice architecture.”

Stately homes are commonplace here
Squirrel Hill South’s residential corridors are filled with architectural eye candy. Many of the homes around this neighborhood were built from the early to mid-20th century, though there are some modern options, including in the development dubbed Summerset at Frick Park. Colonial is the most common style seen around the area, though the area is also dotted with examples of other designs, including Tudor. The common thread linking many of Squirrel Hill South’s homes, old and new, is their stout and stately brick exteriors. Homes around the neighborhood fill wide streets, lined with greenery and smooth sidewalks. Some of the streets here are even lined with brick. There are some condos in Squirrel Hill South, supplementing the single-family homes here and those come with prices that start in the mid-$100,000s. Single-family options in Squirrel Hill North often start in the mid-$200,000s, and prices can reach more than $1 million for an expansive modern or updated home in the area.

Commercial district is bustling
At the core of Squirrel Hill South is a commercial district full of eateries and other businesses. Many of the options here line the thoroughfares of Murray Avenue and Forbes Avenue. “It’s a short but packed business district,” Grauzer says. “You can walk up Murray or Forbes. They’re pretty dense with businesses.” The restaurants here help represent the neighborhood’s diversity, which includes heavy representation of those of Jewish and Asian descent. “I think what excels in this neighborhood are a lot of Asian options, Sichuan or Taiwanese,” Grauzer says. “I think it’s the best neighborhood in the city for that kind of food.” Among the hotspots is Took Took 98, serving up Thai food like spicy fried rice and pumpkin curry.
Grauzer’s business, Jerry’s Records, is one of the many on Murray Avenue, down the street from Took Took 98. Jerry’s dates back to the late 1970s, under original owner Jerry Weber. Grauzer has owned the store since 2017, a spot once named one of the best record stores in the country by Rolling Stone. “We moved to Squirrel Hill in ’94,” Grauzer says. “If you’re into records you know the name Jerry’s Records.”
The neighborhood’s offerings also include multiple markets, convenient for groceries and other essentials. Among those on the list are Giant Eagle Supermarket, Murray Avenue Kosher and New Young's Oriental Grocery Store.

Squirrel Hill comes alive at night
Local business organization Uncover Squirrel Hill takes advantage of the neighborhood’s commercial district with an annual tradition dubbed Squirrel Hill Night Market. Influenced by similar markets held in Asia and elsewhere, Squirrel Hill Night Market includes more than 70 vendors selling a variety of products, plus live music, food trucks and activities for kids. The markets are held in June, August and September.
Local schools are well-regarded
Kids in Squirrel Hill South can attend schools in the Pittsburgh Public Schools system. Most in the neighborhood can start at Colfax K-8, which boasts a B-plus overall grade on Niche and offers English as a Second Language instruction. Then, students can move on to the B-plus-rated Allderdice High School, which has an engineering magnet program. Area students can also stay close to home for higher education — both Carnegie Mellon University and Chatham University are in neighboring Squirrel Hill North.

Park space is abundant
Squirrel Hill South is bookended by a pair of crown jewels in Schenley Park and Frick Park. “They’re two treasures of Pittsburgh for sure,” Grauzer says. “A lot to do in either park.” Schenley Park stretches 456 acres and Frick Park is 644 acres, the largest park in the city. Frick Park is coursing with trails, 17 miles worth of them. There are also multiple athletic fields and an off-leash dog area here. Among Schenley Park’s features is the public Bob O’Connor Golf Course, a disc golf course and a public pool.
The Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh, on Forbes Avenue, is an option for indoor recreation in the neighborhood. The JCC features a fitness center, multiple gyms, a dance studio and a spin studio.

Travel around with Pittsburgh Regional Transit
Squirrel Hill South has multiple bus stops in the Pittsburgh Regional Transit system. PRT includes almost 100 routes, served by some 700 buses.
Also, Interstate 376 crosses through the neighborhood, which residents can hop on quickly to reach Downtown Pittsburgh, just about 5 miles to the west.
Public transportation is easy to access when in Squirrel Hill South.

A tight-knit, friendly, and open-minded community. While it's 70% white, it's very diverse due to its proximity to Carnegie Mellon and the University of Pittsburgh, and the confluence of Asian and Jewish influences on the business district is a joy. People truly are friendly and want to help each other out, and there's a strong "third place" feel to a number of the coffeeshops and hangouts that you don't find easily in many cities.

My family and I have been living in the neighborhood of Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh (PA). It's wealthy, well-to do, and predominantly Jewish; and I have to admit, sometimes it's funny to hear people's reactions when I say I live here. But it's a really good neighborhood. More than that, it's home.
