Dammeron Valley offers a peaceful lifestyle in the desert
Distant mountain views and a flat desert landscape surround Dammeron Valley, a rural area about 17 miles north of St George. Most of the neighborhood is residential, though the nearby terrain offers plenty of recreation. Homes often sit on acreage, with room for stables and horses. “It’s a really quiet community […] we’ve got a lot of wildlife in the area, and it’s more spread out,” says RYAN ANDERSEN, a Realtor with ERA Brokers, who has lived in Dammeron Valley for over 30 years. “We’ve got some really awesome sunrises and sunsets.”
Custom single-family homes on acreage
Most homes in Dammeron Valley sit on large lots of land, with desert trees and shrubbery on rock beds decorating the yards. “It’s all single-family homes. They sit on properties that are two-thirds of an acre up to 13 acres,” Andersen says. “There are quite a few horse properties here [..] we’ve got a few families that put on rodeos in the valley.”
Contemporary homes with Craftsman features are common, both single and multistory. These houses were built from the 1980s to the 2010s and often have adobe siding, pointed roofs and stone accents. Some are farmhouse-inspired with front porches, and others resemble Colonials with dormer windows. The neighborhood also has ranch-style homes and pueblos. Prices range between $510,000 and $950,000, depending on the home’s age and square footage.
The CAP Index Crime Score for Dammeron Valley is 2 out of 10, less than the national average of 4.
State and community parks offering outdoor adventure
Dammeron Valley is surrounded by natural recreation. Prophesy Wall is a popular spot for rappelling, just east of the neighborhood, and attracts rock climbers from all over the country. Snow Canyon State Park is about 4 miles south and has over 38 miles of hiking trails and over 15 miles of equestrian trails. The park is also popular for wildlife viewing, with its coyotes, roadrunners and the protected desert tortoise. About 18 miles south is the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area, also called the Red Mountain Wilderness. Several trails travel the terrain and three creeks flow through. Dinosaur tracks and fossils are found along its sandstone cliffs.
Within the neighborhood is the Dammeron Valley Community Park, which has a playground and baseball field. According to Andersen, the park often hosts community events, such as a Halloween Trunk or Treat and an annual Christmas Party. There’s also a community garden filled with fruit trees and vegetables.
Heading into Veyo and St. George for shopping and dining
Since Dammeron Valley lacks commerce, residents travel outside the area for retail and restaurants. Veyo is a small community about 3 miles north that has a handful of gas stations and a Family Dollar. Slice of Veyo is one of its restaurants, serving pizza.
St. George is the preferred destination for shopping and dining. “A lot of us go into town everyday – there are a lot of people who work in town, so a lot of the shopping is done there,” Andersen says. Smith’s and Albertson’s are the closest grocery stores, both around 15 miles away. A commercial corridor along Bluff Street has dozens of small businesses and chain eateries like First Watch and Costa Vida. There are also several Mexican restaurants like El Jinete and Jalapeños Authentic Mexican Food. Red Rock Commons is a shopping center on River Road with national retailers like Old Navy and T.J. Maxx, and Target sits across the street.
Highly rated Washington County public schools
Dammeron Valley is served by the Washington County School District. Young children can start their education at Diamond Valley Elementary School, which earns a B grade from Niche and is recognized as a STEM platinum school. From there, students head to Tonaquint Intermediate School for grades six and seven, then Dixie Middle School for eight and nine – both schools receive a B-minus. Dixie High School has a B and offers Advanced Placement courses and a JROTC program.
Navigating around Dammeron Valley via main roads
Vehicles are needed to travel in and out of Dammeron Valley. Utah state Route 18 is the area’s main thoroughfare, running north and south. Commuters can use SR-18 to reach St. George, about 17 miles south. In St. George, SR-18 connects to Interstate 15, which can be used to reach Las Vegas, roughly 135 miles away. There’s also the St. George Regional Airport, offering commercial flights to major U.S. cities.
Gaining protection from the community’s fire station
Living in the desert comes with a risk of potential wildfires. Dammeron Valley Fire & Rescue combats this risk, protecting the community with its fire prevention, wildland fire and emergency services. The department has advanced EMTs and paramedics on staff, in addition to its trained and certified firefighters. “In our community, we have an average of about a four-minute response time,” Andersen says. “If there’s an emergency, they’re going to have people at their home pretty quickly.”
