Five miles south of Prince Frederick is the rural neighborhood of Port Republic. This small community is bordered by the Chesapeake Bay and the Patuxent River, giving it a beachy feel and plenty of opportunities to fish and walk by the water. This area’s rich history as a fishing town dates to the 1800s, and locals strolling the waterfront can, on occasion, find shark teeth washed up along the sandy shores.

Houses are set back from the street on broad, spacious properties bordered by tall trees. Some areas are home to custom-built modern farmhouses built in tandem with their neighbors as part of a local development, and others have older houses constructed separately. Older houses are often bungalow and ranch styles. Houses here range in price from $350,000 to $750,000, depending on the house’s build year and size. Most houses that are part of a recent development are priced between $700,000 and $750,000. “The Western Shores area, including Port Republic, is one of many desired Chesapeake Bay beach communities on the western shore of Maryland,” says Gail Siegal, a realtor with O’Brien Realty at the Solomons office in nearby Solomons, Maryland. “This area has beautiful views of the Chesapeake Bay and is commuter-friendly for people from Washington, D.C.”

Students living in Port Republic attend Calvert County Public School District schools, rated A-minus by Niche. This district was listed as the fifth-best school district in Maryland. A student in Port Republic may attend Mutual Elementary School, rated B-plus by Niche, Calvert Middle School, ranked B, and Calvert High School, rated A-minus and listed as the third-best public high school in the county.

When the school and workday ends, locals head to American Chestnut Land Trust South Side, a public preserve with 22 miles of trails spanning 3,400 acres of pristine land. This free-to-the-public park offers guided canoe trips along Parkers Creek, plenty of trails for hiking and opportunities to volunteer in their regenerative farming program that benefits local food pantries. There’s also Battle Creek Cypress Swamp Sanctuary, a park featuring a wetland boardwalk, birdwatching, interactive exhibits and a picnic area. This property was acquired by The Nature Conservancy in 1957 and is a protected home to many species of plants and animals. Equestrians will love RiverView Stables, a stable offering horse riding lessons for adults and children. Plus, Port Republic is just seven miles from Calvert Beach, where residents get free access to the beach. “There are a number of really cool Chesapeake Bay communities, where there are plenty of outdoor activities, beautiful parks and family-friendly festivals,” says Siegal.

After building up your appetite in one of Port Republic’s parks or beaches, head to the Gateway Restaurant & Lounge for dinner. This hole-in-the-wall restaurant is known for its seafood and prime rib specials. If you’re in the mood for barbeque, Adam’s Taphouse and Grille Prince Frederick offers classic brisket, ribs and pulled pork.

Between bayside views, welcoming neighborhoods and a litany of outdoor entertainment options, there’s a lot to love about Port Republic, Maryland.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
