St. Pete Beach is a city all its own. It was originally called St. Petersburg Beach during its 1957 incorporation but changed its name in 1994 to avoid confusion with St. Petersburg, the Pinellas County city around 10 miles east. In personality, too, the barrier island community of nearly 9,000 people stands alone. Staying on the beach from sunrise to sunset or later, surrounded by a variety of food, drinks and activities, is common even for locals. Tourism and hospitality are major industries, and commuting into St. Petersburg is convenient.
Like much of Florida, the island was affected by hurricanes Helene and Milton in the fall of 2024. Many homes and condos, especially those on the ground floor, sustained water damage. Landmarks like the Don CeSar hotel and The Beachcomber resort were forced to close for repairs, as were a number of smaller businesses. Melinda Persuitte, a Realtor with Compass Real Estate , says the area remains in recovery — but brighter days are ahead. “We’re all very hopeful, all helping each other,” Persuitte says. “It’s good to see.”

Waterfront condos and Spanish Revival-influenced homes
Homes have a median price of around $815,000, well above the state median. Waterfront condos are a large part of the housing market, as are midcentury Spanish Revival-influenced homes. Homes spend an average of about 95 days on the market. “People are being more measured with their spending,” Persuitte says. “There are a lot of second homes here. They’re not a need.”

Beaches are the city's biggest draw
The island’s numerous beaches allow visitors to enjoy the Gulf of Mexico and Boca Ciega Bay. The namesake St. Pete Beach is often bustling with visitors, while Pass-a-Grille Beach is quieter. Upham Beach Park is known for its snorkeling. Around 70% of residents live within a 10-minute walk of a park, well above the U.S. urban median. Boat ramps are placed throughout the city.

A short drive to Tampa International Airport
State roads 682 and 693 connect the island with the mainland. Clearwater is less than 20 miles north and Tampa is around 30 miles northeast. Tampa International Airport has nonstop flights to several domestic and global destinations. The SunRunner rapid transit bus can take riders from St. Pete Beach to downtown St. Petersburg. While there are no hospitals on St. Pete Beach, St. Petersburg has several. HCA Florida Pasadena Hospital has 307 beds.

The Don CeSar hotel is still standing
The Don CeSar hotel is one of St. Pete Beach’s most recognizable landmarks. The “Pink Palace” has served its guests since 1928, and though it sustained hurricane damage, it is scheduled to reopen in the first quarter of 2025. The Beach Theatre, an art deco venue closed since 2012, has plans to reopen in July 2025 hosting movie screenings and live performances.
The Suntan Art Center offers art classes and hosts events throughout the year. St. Pete Beach Public Library serves the Pinellas County area and recently underwent a $2.6 million renovation. Residents can make the short drive to St. Petersburg for more museums and cultural centers.

Corey Avenue has boutiques and local restaurants
Historic Corey Avenue is the city’s shopping hub and has many boutiques and specialty retailers. The street also has restaurants like La Croisette, which serves a fusion of American and French breakfast and lunch. Similarly, 8th Avenue near Pass-a-Grille Beach has many clothing stores, eateries and bars.

Hurricanes remain a risk each year
St. Pete Beach has hot, muggy weather that lasts for much of the year. Afternoon rainstorms are a regular occurrence. Winters are mild and without much precipitation.
The city is at a very high risk of hurricanes and lightning, and a relatively high risk of tornadoes and coastal flooding. However, Persuitte says 2024’s hurricanes were unusual in their impact on the area. “I’ve been here for 16 years, and that was the first time we evacuated,” Persuitte says. “Usually, shutters and sandbags are enough.”
According to FBI data, violent and property crime incidents slightly rose in 2023.
St. Petersburg Collegiate High School aces the grade
Students are served by Pinellas County Schools, which has an A-minus Niche grade. The district serves more than 93,000 students across 188 schools. St. Petersburg Collegiate High School has an individual A-plus grade.
Gulf Beaches Elementary teaches kids K-5th grade.
Thurgood Marshall middle school has a rating of A- on niche.
