After 50 years, Stallings continues to grow

Incorporated in 1975, Stallings is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The town of about 16,000 residents sits between Indian Trail and Matthews, where some of their borders overlap. The small town is just six miles long but has been rapidly growing because of its family atmosphere and climate, which experiences mild winters and hot, humid summers. Prospective homebuyers are also attracted to the city because of its proximity to Charlotte. “It’s a great place for those not wanting to pay Mecklenburg County taxes but still have easy access to all Charlotte offers,” says Danielle Edwards, a Realtor with RE/MAX Executive who frequently sells in the area. “If someone is commuting to Uptown, this is a great little pocket town to live in.”

Townhouses and 55+ communities to fit residents' needs

The median price of a single-family home in Stallings is around $500,000, which is higher than the national median and slightly higher than Charlotte’s median of $450,000. Townhouses in the area range from about $226,000 to $478,000. Homes tend to stay on the market for an average of 36 days. “It used to be a quiet town that no one knew about, and now, it’s a place people go if they’re being priced out of Charlotte,” Edwards says. There are many new homes under construction, including townhouses as the town attracts more young professionals, as well as homes in 55+ communities.

Union County Public Schools offers school choice

Union County Public Schools earn an A overall grade on Niche. The town is split between two school zones, so families should confirm their respective zone before buying. Students can apply through a lottery system to attend any elementary, middle or high school in the district with under 85% capacity. This includes A-rated Union County Early College, located in the Old Charlotte Highway Campus of South Piedmont Community College, and A-plus-rated Central Academy of Technology & Arts.

Events at Stallings Municipal Park

Stallings Municipal Park is the town's biggest green space, with pickleball and tennis courts, a splash pad and four playgrounds. “You can rent out picnic areas to host birthday parties,” Edward says. The park also hosts many community events, including holiday celebrations like Stalloween and The ShamROCKin Concert. In 2025, the annual Stallings Fest is called 50 Fest to celebrate the town’s anniversary.

Blair Mill has an 18-hole disc golf course, while Privette Park is a smaller park with a playground. Extreme Ice Center is a skating facility just outside of Stallings, and a Mecklenburg Swim Association club is also nearby. “Swimming is big here,” Edwards says. “People will move to our area because they want their kids to be Olympic swimmers.”

A few miles from Sycamore Commons Shopping Mall

Shopping and dining in Stallings is mostly concentrated in a small area. While residents may have to drive to Matthews or Charlotte for larger restaurant, retail and grocery chains, Stallings has smaller grocers like Asian and Italian supermarkets, a few local restaurants and several small businesses in the construction and mechanic fields. Sycamore Commons Shopping Mall and Matthews Township Shopping Center are a few miles up U.S. Route 74.

A gateway to U.S. Route 74

“You always kind of have to drive through Stallings to get to other places,” Edwards says. “It’s two or three traffic lights to get on U.S. Route 74. It’s a great gateway for those looking to move to this area.” The drive to Charlotte takes about 15 miles on U.S. Route 74. Drivers can take the same route to Charlotte Douglas International Airport in around 21 miles or take Interstate 485 Inner and get there in around 28 miles. Atrium Health Union West is a hospital that opened in Matthews in 2022. There is no crime data available.
