Star Prairie offers stunning sky and water views in a convenient location next to the Apple River and Deer Lake and just 40 miles from Minneapolis. “It’s a rural community with quick access to the Twin Cities,” says Jim Moe, a Realtor who’s been selling homes with WESTconsin Realty, LLC for 38 years and has lived in the area all his life. “About 50% of the people here commute to the Twin Cities for work.”

Traditional-style homes can be found in the neighborhood ranging from $250,000 to $500,000, depending on how many floors you’re looking for. If you want to take matters into your own hands, you can build your own home in the neighborhood. “It’s a custom-built community,” says Moe. Outside these homes, you’ll see groomed, mid-sized front yards and long, paved driveways. Waterfront living is also offered with 1940s, single-family homes sitting on Deer Lake ranging from $600,000 to $620,000.

Children can attend Somerset Elementary School, which has a B-plus from Niche. They may advance to Somerset Middle School, which has a student-to-teacher ratio of 14:1 and earns a B-plus from Niche. Students can move on to Somerset High School, which also has a B-plus from Niche and ranks in the top 50 for best public high school teachers in Wisconsin. The school offers students health insurance which covers routine doctor’s visits, prescriptions and mental health services.

You can pick up a game of baseball at Village Park and enjoy lunch afterward under the pavilions. The park also hosts an annual fireworks show on July 4 and an Ox Cart Days Festival each August with live music, a queen coronation, food vendors and a canoe race. Saratoga Springs Park offers a 1-mile trail to walk, run or hike that’s surrounded by towering trees. At River Island Park, you can listen to the river flow while playing frisbee or doing yoga. Find more waterfront fun at Deer Lake, which has a beach area where you can sit and relax. Connect with more nature while walking along the Riverwood Nature Reserve, which also has a gift shop where you can buy woven baskets, art pieces and clothing.

A nine-minute drive down Wisconsin Highway 65 will get you to Dick’s Fresh Market, which offers fresh produce and food staples. You’ll find quicker, to-go items closer to the neighborhood at the Star Prairie Convenience Store, which also has a BP gas station attached. Residents find themselves driving down Main Street to get to most restaurants and bars, like Main Street Pizza and Star Prairie Sports Bar. You can grab a drink at the Friendly Bar Inc., which also has a pool table if you’re up to play. Or get a cup of joe at Jewelltown Roastery, which also offers fresh pastries and live music on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Stay put in Star Prairie, where residents can always look up and see the stars.
