Neighborhood in Staten Island, New York
Richmond County 10306

A mix of charming architectural styles imbues a beachy character
Across the neighborhood, a mix of architectural styles gives the area its own flavor. “New Dorp has a lot of old charm homes,” Bongiorno says, noting that Tudor styles, Capes and colonials are most common. Shingled cottages also mingle with small bungalow styles that imbue the neighborhood with a beachy feel. “The homes all have that classic feel to them; many were built at the turn of the century and have kept their original structure and character,” Bongiorno says, adding that the home sizes stay on the smaller side compared to other neighborhoods. “Homes range but they’re on the cozier side. They didn’t need as much space then as we need now.” While condos and co-ops may list between $245,000 and $420,000, single-family homes typically range from $550,000 up to $1.4 million. From sandy beaches to wooded nature reserves
Salty waves of Lower Bay crash at the many beaches that stretch along the Staten Island shore just blocks away from New Dorp residents. Bongiorno says locals have a few beaches to choose from; though New Dorp Beach is a straight shot down New Dorp Lane, other sandy banks include Cedar Grove Beach and Oakwood Beach to the south, and Midland Beach to the north. Residents can access High Rock Park just a few miles northwest. Walking trails within the 90-acre city park uncover ponds, wetlands and panoramic views. New Dorp Park is a wooded nature reserve that offers a pocket of green in the middle of the neighborhood. For sports and athletic recreation, locals take advantage of the various facilities at Miller Field. Once an Army Air Corps base, the 187-acre recreation area now features a soccer field, cricket ground, basketball and bocce courts and a playground.High achieving academic programs on Staten Island
Students in New Dorp can attend a slew of highly-rated schools on the island, including P.S. 41 The Stephanie A. Vierno School for prekindergarten through fifth grade. Kids may continue to I.S. R002 George L. Egbert. Both schools earn an A-minus score from Niche. New Dorp High School receives a B-plus grade with top scores for diversity, teachers and administration. Additionally, the A-plus-rated Staten Island Technical High School is located centrally in the neighborhood and is known for its high-achieving, rigorous Pre-Engineering Career and Technical Education program.Friendly community ties fostered by local organizations and events
The New Dorp Lane District is a community organization that spearheads events in the neighborhood. “They hold events for charities, local schools and businesses, and Staten Island as a whole,” Bongiorno says, noting that these gatherings often help foster the sense of community that New Dorp is known for. Over 1,000 people attend the organization’s annual New Dorp Restaurant Crawl to try the cuisines of nearly 30 eateries, as well as live music and family-friendly activities. Every fall, locals gather at the New Dorp Car Show to see classic, vintage, and antique vehicles. The day-long event, which is free for all spectators, includes entertainment, music and vendors as unique cars line up along New Dorp Lane.Convenient island location for a prime commute
The Staten Island Expressway and Verrazzano Bridge are only 4 miles from the neighborhood, connecting residents to Brooklyn and beyond. “New Dorp is a comfortable location for traveling because you don’t have to get on the Staten Island Expressway, which anyone who lives on the island knows can be a nightmare,” Bongiorno says. “You can get off at the first exit and move around without staying on the expressway for a long time, which is helpful. So, transportation to and from work is less stressful than other areas on the island.” Additionally, bus stops are scattered around the neighborhood and the Staten Island Railway stops at the New Dorp station.Shops and restaurants buzz along New Dorp Lane
Local shops and quaint eateries that add character to the island enclave are clustered along New Dorp Lane, ranging from casual pizza joints to elevated American restaurants and charming cafes. Brioso serves upscale Italian dishes like seafood and pasta in a rustic spot, and Piece-A-Cake bakery across the street offers display windows chock-full of plump donuts alongside lengthy sandwich and salad menus. Locals enter an airy French-inspired garden at the Prince Tea House, which serves hors d’oevres, desserts and teas in dainty dishware. “New Dorp is also adjacent to neighborhoods like Toad Hill that have multiple restaurants,” Bongiorno says. “Richmond Road has a lot of the newer, trendier restaurants, so there are a lot of restaurants in the area.” Shopping malls on Hyland Boulevard – namely The Boulevard and Tysens Park Shopping Center – in neighboring New Dorp Beach fulfill retail needs. Stores include HomeGoods, Old Navy and Marshall’s. A Stop & Shop and ShopRite of Hylan Plaza are nearby grocery options.
