Nearly all of the homes in Silver Lake lie within the small cluster of quiet streets along the western edge of Silver Lake Park, a streetscape unlike any other Staten Island neighborhood. Many of the broad streets are split down the middle by tree-lined medians, where some of the borough’s oldest trees cast long shadows across single-family homes, manicured lawns and well-appointed garden beds. Anchoring the neighborhood’s center, Silver Lake Park has had many iterations over the last 200 years, including as a site for a 19th-century casino, saloon and Staten Island’s first icehouse, as well as a sprawling forest preserve and reservoir for drinking water. Today, the park remains vital to locals as a popular green space for recreation and relaxation from the city hustle. “It’s a beautiful area,” says Qais Shawabkeh, a real estate broker at Intella Properties. “Many of the people trying to buy homes in Silver Lake are from Brooklyn,” says Shawabkeh. “They can afford to buy a home in Silver Lake instead of renting in Brooklyn, and parts of Silver Lake have a similar vibe.”

Silver Lake Park is undoubtedly the nucleus of the Silver Lake neighborhood, a 209-acre recreational oasis and Staten Island’s equivalent to Manhattan’s Central Park. The park occupies over 80 percent of the neighborhood’s total area, and for the lucky few who call Silver Lake home, the park serves as an extension of their large backyards. Complete with rugged nature trails, tennis courts, playgrounds, sports fields, dog run areas and an 18-hole golf course, it’s a popular, year-round destination for residents. Walking trails surround the entirety of Silver Lake—a reservoir that was originally a spring-fed body of water that dates back to the Ice Age—including the promenade known as the Audre Lorde Walk, named after the great Black American poet laureate and activist who lived nearby. The lake forms a large figure-eight at the center of the park, divided in half by a turn-of-the-century stone dam footbridge. Families can access both the Silver Lake Playground on the western side of the lake or the Silver Lake Park Tot Lot on the eastern side. Southwest of the neighborhood, Clove Lakes Park is also a serene attraction for locals.

Shopping and dining primarily found on Forest Avenue
The neighborhood is bordered to the north by Forest Avenue, a bustling stretch of shops, markets and pedestrian traffic that comes alive each weekend, bringing an element of excitement to an otherwise quiet residential neighborhood.
