Glen Lord attracts full-time and weekend residents by Lake Michigan
Glen Lord blends modest and upscale living along the shores of Lake Michigan, where residents are always close to nature. “It’s full of big old trees. You feel like you’re living in a forest, but with manicured lawns," says Realtor Christine Gianni with Jaqua Realtors, who has lived in Glen Lord since 2010. Luxurious lakefront estates, gated residential streets and suburban developments have homebuyers spending anywhere from $200,000 to $4 million. Many of them hail from The Windy City. “I’d say there are probably 75% permanent residents and 25% weekenders from Chicago,” Gianni says. “They come here to escape city life and enjoy the lake.”
From modest ranch-style homes to multi-million-dollar waterfronts
Luxury houses west of Red Arrow Highway, closer to Lake Michigan, are built on densely wooded lots with mature trees providing a private living space. Even more private are those same houses along three gated streets: Sundance Path, Wild Dunes Path and Dunes Valley Path. The latter two are connected, with Wild Dunes Path leading to a private beach. “The gated streets have a more corporate, executive feel with bigger homes, nicer gardens and a clicker that opens the gate,” Gianni says. These upscale houses, some of which face the lake, range from $1 million to $4 million. Some lakefront homes are in flood zones, but most are protected by being high up on bluffs. Waterfront condos range from $200,000 to $450,000 for one to three-bedroom units. One high-end condo with four bedrooms sold for $985,000. Other subdivisions feature houses built between the mid-1900s and early 2000s, including ranch-style homes ranging from $250,000 to $600,000 and larger New Traditional houses ranging from $675,000 to $740,000.
Glenlord Beach Park sunsets, state park sand dunes and an ice rink
Glenlord Beach Park was a destination for relaxing on a Lake Michigan beach until the sandy shoreline eroded in 2020. To prevent further erosion, a revetment wall of rocks was created. “It’s more of a viewing park now,” Gianni says. “You can sit in a seat and watch the sunset over the lake.” Grand Mere State Park is less than 10 minutes away with trails through forested dunes and a beach with views beyond the water. “If you go at the right time and the weather is right, you can see the Chicago skyline,” Gianni says. This phenomenon is called an atmospheric refraction, which brings the skyscrapers of The Windy City into view despite being below the horizon. The state park’s dunes become sledding hills in the winter. The Garden Ice Arena is open all year with youth and adult hockey leagues, open skating and ice bumper cars.
Local bakery and Italian restaurant share a decades-long bond
In the residential area on the west side of the neighborhood, Tosi’s Restaurant and the Bit of Swiss bakery offer elegant dining experiences and a lasting partnership. Tosi’s serves Italian cuisine inside and out in the Italian garden. Bit of Swiss got its start by making bread for Tosi’s in the 1960s and has transformed into a local staple for European-style baked goods. National chain restaurants line Red Arrow Highway, along with a Meijer and Aldi for everyday shopping needs.
Multiple band state championships at Lakeshore High School
Stewart Elementary School receives a B-plus grade from Niche and is close to many homes on the west side of Red Arrow Highway. “You see kids walking and riding their bikes to school all the time,” Gianni says. Lakeshore Middle School and Lakeshore High School are a few miles from the neighborhood. Both receive A-minus Niche grades. The high school’s band has won the state championship four times since 2018, including back-to-back victories in 2023 and 2024.
Lakeshore Drive to Benton Harbor and I-94 to Chicago
From Interstate 94, it takes around 90 minutes to two hours to drive to Chicago, home to Chicago O’Hare International Airport. Lakeshore Drive runs parallel to Lake Michigan and can be taken about 7 miles to St. Joseph and Benton Harbor in less than 15 minutes.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
