This Marin County community, just about two dozen miles north of San Francisco, is known as a swimming and surfing hotspot. Beach anchors the area

The coast is the defining aspect of Stinson Beach. The area features more than 3 miles of beachfront, including Stinson Beach itself and also Upton Beach. These beaches face the roughly 5-mile-long Bolinas Bay and both are wide, with plenty of space to lay down a blanket and relax. With its calm waves, the beach here is considered one of the best for swimming in Northern California. Surfing here is prime from winter to spring. “It’s a spectacular beach. It’s very clean, perfect for running at low tide,” says Realtor Sarah Butler, owner of Oceanic Realty and a longtime Stinson Beach resident. "And it's in a banana belt so it's sunnier and less foggy than some places nearby." Stinson Beach is popular not just with locals, but also with tourists.

Stinson Beach also has standout hiking, including the more than 7-mile Dipsea Trail. Dipsea Trail is made up of an assortment of terrain and climbs to a peak of 1,360 feet, offering views of the ocean to the west.

Homes run the gamut

Stinson Beach packs quite a bit of variety into its compact coastal makeup. There are houses here that date back to the mid-20th century, homes built after the turn of the 21st century and an assortment of options in between. Architectural styles here vary quite a bit, too, from single-story cottages to elaborate contemporary-style dwellings with windows to the roof. There’s also a gated community here, with a private street: Seadrift. Seadrift runs along the entirety of Stinson Beach’s Seadrift Road and also includes Dipsea Road. Homes around Stinson Beach have one common denominator. “There’s nothing there under a million,” Butler says. Prices here start around $1.2 million for cottages and bungalows less than 1,000 square feet and can climb to well over $10 million for some of the expansive properties of the Seadrift community.

Come together as a community

Stinson Beach and the nearby Bolinas area have multiple events each year. The Stinson Beach Community Center has a documentary film festival in November, a three-day event full of several films, on a range of topics. Bolinas hosts a Fourth of July celebration as well, which features a parade, a barbecue and games on the beach.

A bite to eat right around the corner

The sphere around Shoreline Highway and Arenal Avenue, on the east side of Stinson Beach, includes multiple restaurants and other businesses. Among the offerings is Parkside Café, which has been open since 1949 and is known for everything from its burgers to its pastries to its "half 'n half'' ice cream cones, a blend of chocolate and vanilla. Breakers Café is another well-liked spot here, particularly for its tacos. Locals can also grab produce, meats and more at the Stinson Beach Market, down the street from Breakers.

Schools hit high marks

Students in this area can attend schools in the Bolinas-Stinson Union School District to start, a system that carries an A overall rating on Niche. The Bolinas-Stinson Union School District is split into two campuses — the Stinson Beach Campus includes prekindergarten through first grade, while the Bolinas Campus houses grades 2 to 8. Student-teacher ratios in the Bolinas-Stinson system average out at 12-to-1. Students can then move on to the A-plus-rated Tamalpais High School, which has a dedicated Applied Technology department with courses in everything from architectural design to computer programming to principles of engineering.

Move around with Marin Transit

Stinson Beach has two stops on the Marin Transit bus system, both on Shoreline Highway near Stinson Beach Market. The Marin Transit system traverses Marin County, and features a couple dozen miles total.

Drivers in Stinson Beach can utilize California State Route 1 to access nearby Bolinas. Also, San Francisco is accessible via Route 1 and U.S. Route 101, across the Golden Gate Bridge.
