Nobility Hill
Neighborhood in Stoneham, Massachusetts

Victorian and colonial-style houses with historic flair
The neighborhood’s network of residential streets features an array of architectural styles, though a high number of elaborate Victorian and colonial-style homes — many with bay windows and bracket detailing — reflect the hamlet’s historic roots. “A lot of industry started in this area, mainly a shoe factory whose owners built homes here,” Grant says. “When the neighborhood was developed, there were mostly Victorians and colonial-styles, but in this day and age, you see more converted homes and townhouses.” Bound by Chestnut and Maple Streets, Nobility Hill’s Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990 for its representation of fashionable homes built between 1860 and 1920. Today, these historic homes sit between bungalows, Cape Cods, and Dutch Colonial homes. Single-family homes in the neighborhood may range in price between $600,000 and $1 million, while condos and townhouses in converted buildings can fetch from $325,000 to $500,000.Recreation at Middlesex Fells Reservation and local parks
Nobility Hill doesn’t have many open green spaces for activity, but the neighborhood sits just north of the sprawling Middlesex Fells Reservation, a major regional attraction for recreationists and nature lovers. Spanning over 2,500 acres, the tract is adorned with hiking trails that snake around Spot Pond and other picturesque bodies of water. “When the weather is nice, people go kayaking on the pond or rent boats,” Grant says. Parks peppered throughout the reservation offer athletic fields, and the Stone Zoo is home to an assortment of animals. Additional athletic facilities and playgrounds are located at nearby parks such as the Steele Playground and Recreation Park in central Stoneham. Locals may also head to Stoneham Arena to skate its NHL-sized ice rink during public skating sessions and classes.Strong academics in Stoneham Public School District
Students may attend schools within the Stoneham Public School District, which serves over 2,000 kids in the area. Prekindergarten through fourth graders may attend South Elementary School, which earns an A grade from Niche. Fifth through eighth graders can enroll in Stoneham Central Middle School before advancing to Stoneham High School. Both schools earn B-plus grades. Private options include the Greater Boston Academy, a top choice for parents due to its A-plus rating.Community events at the Stoneham Town Common and Greater Boston Stage Company
Grant notes that Stoneham’s stacked social calendar adds to the community’s family-friendly feel and welcoming vibe. The Stoneham Town Common, a tract of green space centrally located in the town, is a popular gathering spot for events, including a weekly farmers market and annual goings-on. “The common area is set up as an ice-skating rink in the wintertime, and bands play in the gazebo during the summer,” Grant says. “People bring chairs and enjoy the music and have a good time.” Locals also stay engaged in the arts at the Greater Boston Stage Company, a regional performing arts theater that features six productions throughout the year.Connectivity to Boston by car and train
Quick access to Interstate 93 is another plus for residents. The highway links to the heart of Boston, about 10 miles south. Nobility Hill’s west side is bound by Main Street, which runs up to Reading and becomes Massachusetts Route 28 south of the neighborhood. Nearby train stations include Winchester Center and Greenwood, both connecting commuters to Boston on the Haverhill Line within 30 minutes. Boston Logan International Airport is about 12 miles away.Walking distance to shops and eateries on Main Street
While most of the neighborhood maintains a residential feel, Nobility Hill residents are within walking distance of Main Street, Stoneham’s central thoroughfare that bounds the neighborhood to the west. Lined with many of the town’s restaurants and local businesses, Main Street cuts north-south through Stoneham. Salons, offices and cozy eateries sit shoulder-to-shoulder, welcoming passersby. Locals can start their day with a specialty coffee drink at Kennedy’s Café and finish their day over cocktails and craft beers at The Stones Common House and Kitchen, an elevated bar and popular neighborhood staple. Casual pizzerias, Chinese take-out spots and pubs like Nobility Hill Tavern also buzz with hungry activity. About a mile north along Main Street, residents can grab grocery necessities at Stop & Shop and visit the Redstone Shopping Mall stores, including Target, Michaels and Marshalls.
