Strasburg offers industries and interstate access
Strasburg is a small community in Franklin Township. Pioneers began settling in the area in the early 1800s, and by the late 1800s, railroads enabled brickmakers and loggers to transport goods. Today, the population has grown to nearly 3,000 residents, and it is home to some manufacturing industries and locally owned businesses. “Strasburg is a fairly rural area with a few modern conveniences,” says Aaron Miller, a Realtor with Kaufman Realty & Auctions, who has lived in the region for his entire life. “There are enough stores in the village that you can get what you need, and you’ve also got close proximity to Interstate 77 for access to Canton, Dover and New Philadelphia.”
Older homes near the center, and larger lots on the outskirts
Streetscapes and housing styles vary throughout the area. A grid of streets with sidewalks forms the village center, where farmhouses and bungalows from the early-to-mid 1900s rest relatively close together. Farther from the center, wide, grassy lawns line the curving streets, and private driveways separate late 1900s ranch-style homes and split-levels. There are also more rural sections of the community with multiacre residential lots next to farmland or open fields. Homes in Strasburg often sell from $120,000 to $380,000, depending on size and condition. Condos in the Pine Ridge development tend to go between $210,000 and $340,000, and monthly HOA fees range from about $200 to $300. Storms can lead to flooding along Sugar Creek, and some lenders may require flood insurance.
Strasburg schools offer support for military families
Children can learn through the Strasburg-Franklin Local School District, which earns a B-plus on Niche. The district is dedicated to supporting military families, and each school has a liaison who can help students in military families transition smoothly to a new school. Kids may begin learning at the B-plus-rated Strasburg Elementary School. Strasburg Middle School/High School gets a B, and it is known for its strong sports program, with teams that often qualify for regional and statewide tournaments.
Recreation includes several sports facilities and a historic drive-in
Despite its relatively small size, Strasburg offers a variety of recreation. Strasburg Franklin Park has several ballfields, tennis courts and a playground. Community members can use the Strasburg Middle School/High School gymnasium during nonschool hours. Willie’s Custom Golf Center, on the western edge of the village, offers a driving range and indoor golf simulators to help golfers hone their skills. At the Strasburg Branch of the Tuscarawas County Public Library System, there are children’s story times and animal encounters, as well as workshops to teach people how to use the library’s Cricut, heat press and sublimation printer. The Lynn Drive-In, which originally opened in the 1930s, shows first-run movies.
A few restaurants and stores, plus many more options within 30 miles
Strasburg has a few fast-food places and a handful of locally owned dining spots. “Rosalie’s Restaurant is a great place for breakfast,” Miller says. 63 Corks has a menu that highlights regionally sourced produce and fish. Valley Center Plaza is home to Guadalupana, a Mexican seafood restaurant, and Campesino’s Grill, which serves grilled meat and margaritas.
Retail options in the village include All American Outdoors, which sells outdoor gear, and Village Garden Bulk Food, which stocks meat and dry goods. Buehler’s, a full-service grocery store, is less than 5 miles south. “Most people drive to Canton or New Philadelphia for shopping,” Miller says. Canton, about 25 miles north, is home to the Belden Village Mall. New Philadelphia, around 10 miles south, has a Walmart Supercenter and other chain retail.
Strasburg’s seasonal festivals
At the end of July, locals gather for the Strasburg Summer Festival. The day-long event begins with a 5K race and kids’ fun run, followed by activities at Strasburg Franklin Park, including a three-on-three basketball tournament and a corn-eating contest. Christmas in the Village takes place in mid-December. There’s a parade featuring Santa Claus, and after the parade, Santa heads to the firehouse, where there are snacks and vendors. Members of the village’s churches also sponsor a live nativity scene with a camel.
Nearby manufacturing jobs and access to larger cities
There are a few industries in and around Strasburg, including ProVia, which has a window-manufacturing plant just north of the village, and Tremcar, which makes metal tank trailers. Interstate 77 allows for commutes into nearby Canton, Dover and New Philadelphia as well. Tuscarawas County Public Transportation provides on-demand shuttle service for county residents who need help getting to appointments or services, but most locals depend on cars. The closest emergency room is about 10 miles away, at the Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital in Dover, and the Akron-Canton Airport is around 30 miles north.
