Streamwood, a Cook County village with a population of more than 40,000, is a well-established community 30 miles west of Downtown Chicago. "Streamwood has what you'd find in any residential area. It's not rural or urban,” says Realtor Ryan Carney of Keller Williams Inspire. “It’s already built out; just community-type living where you raise a family.” Dozens of winding residential streets are the norm in Streamwood, brushing against two nature preserves. The town has a surprising uniformity, showcasing evenly spaced lots, sidewalks and private driveways. Come spring, Streamwood’s trees provide extra shade and privacy for homeowners. Residents can even request a new tree via the 50/50 Parkway Tree Program, splitting the cost with the village.

Midcentury homes and new construction at lower price points
Ubiquitous curvy streets dotted with tiny parks comprise this town. Common home styles include 1960s and '70s split-levels and ranch-styles, with newer contemporary homes making the occasional appearance. “I wouldn't call it ritzy,” says Carney. “It's moderate and middle of the stream with first-time homebuyers.” Prices average between $280,000 and $360,000 for the typical three-bedroom home, with the median price sitting at $305,000. The higher end of this range might yield an extra bedroom or even a newly constructed home. Some are in subdivisions, like Sterling Oaks, or are part of homeowner’s associations, which include annual fees of about $600 to $800. Condos which cling to Irving Park Road and around Glenbrook Park date to the 1980s through the 2010s and offer more square footage on average.

Attending class in the U-46 School District
Nearly 36,000 students attend schools within the U-46 School District. The district has an overall grade of B from Niche and a student-to-teacher ratio of 16-to-1. "District U46 tends to get the short end of the stick in terms of public perception, and they are going to great lengths to counter that," says Carney. The district’s Dual Language Program is invaluable to the nearly 40% of students who aren’t native English speakers.

Making the lengthy commute downtown
One of the reasons homebuyers might choose Streamwood over suburbs farther west is to be close to Chicago. "People still need to commute to their jobs in the city, even if they only go one day a week, so living here makes their lives a lot easier,” says Carney. Metra stations Bartlett and Hanover Park provide trains on the Milwaukee District West Line. Pace Bus Route 554 runs in Streamwood and into Elgin and neighboring villages. The latter is more practical, since the commute lasts about an hour and a half. By contrast, taking the bus and connecting to the Blue Line makes for a lengthy two and a half hours at least. Driving into Downtown Chicago takes about 50 minutes with good traffic. For more extensive travel, O'Hare International Airport is about 20 miles away.
