About Suamico, WI

A former fishing village thriving next to Green Bay

Located 12 miles north of Green Bay, the village of Suamico is a bedroom community of 12,820 people that offers a quiet suburban lifestyle and easy access to the metropolitan area. Spanning over 59 square miles of land and water, Suamico is the largest incorporated village by area in the nation. It has outdoor amenities that match, including a local zoo, adventure park and beach parks with boat launches into the bay. “Suamico used to be known as the Fishing Village back in the turn of the century,” says Sky Van Rossum, the village president and a resident of 25 years. “If you looked at Green Bay right now, you’d see all of the ice shanties. There’s got to be three, four hundred fishermen.”

A mix of residential and rental communities

Featuring a mix of single and multifamily developments, Suamico’s diverse housing market includes custom new builds, townhomes and condominiums. Many modern homes have a median sale price of $450,000, higher than the state and national median. Rental opportunities are available in newer developments like Northline Apartments and Woodfield Court Motor Condos. “We have close-knit traditional neighborhoods where you’ve got your basic house lot, then you have places like where I live where you have to swing through the trees to see your neighbor’s house,” Sky says.

A top-five school system for athletes

Rated the fourth best school district in Brown County by Niche.com, the Howard-Suamico School District serves over 5,700 students and was rated an A-minus for its clubs and athletic programs. Coming off of a state championship victory for the football team, Howard-Suamico was ranked amongst the top five best school districts for athletes in Wisconsin and placed in the top 30 nationally. “When a lot of folks are looking for places to move, they look at Howard and Suamico, and a lot of it is the school district,” Sky says.

Exploring the NEW Zoo & Adventure Park

For over 10 years, the Northeast Wisconsin Zoo, or NEW Zoo as locals refer to it, has connected the community with over 200 animals across 90 different exhibits. In addition to virtual experiences and a children’s petting zoo, the attached adventure park also features zip-lining, a ropes course and a 36-foot rock-climbing wall.

Local dining rooted in historical buildings

Downtown Suamico is a bustling small business community featuring a mix of sit-down casual restaurants, pubs and breweries. Chives is an elevated American restaurant that’s a local favorite of former NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers, while Rustique Pizzeria + Lounge operates out of a former chapel over 120 years old. “It’s a lot of older historical buildings,” Sky says. “Station 1 Brewing actually makes their own beer in the old fire station down there.” Local grocery stores include Aldi, Festival Foods and Piggly Wiggly.

Reforestation and preservation efforts

Welcoming over 400,000 guests annually, the Brown County Reforestation Camp has over 1,600 acres of amenities, including softball and volleyball courts, fishing ponds and playground areas. The campgrounds also have over 50 miles of trails for mountain biking, horseback riding and snowmobiling in the winter. Local birdwatchers frequently visit the 900-acre Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve, and the Suamico boat landing allows visitors to launch their canoes and kayaks into the river.

An easy drive to Packertown

The village does not offer public transportation, so residents must rely on their vehicles or rideshare services. The Prevea Health Center handles daytime urgent care, but 24-hour emergency care is a short drive down U.S. Route 41 into Green Bay, which also has major industries in manufacturing and meatpacking. The closest commercial air travel is at the Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport, roughly 14 miles away.

Weather & Crime

Suamico receives about 50 inches of snow every year, and the village keeps the roads clear through seven snow-plowing routes. The Brown County Sheriff’s Office provides local law enforcement, with two deputies covering the community full-time. The area also sees low crime, with averages below state and national levels.
